N'vanik

N'vanik

The last two sevendays had been extremely tiresome for G'van. He'd tried to satisfy the demands of the now-suspicious dragonhealers, but then N'vanik had got on his case for falling asleep during watch duty. Of course he'd sharding fallen asleep, arguing with healers all day was hard work! So that was another sevenday of kowtowing to the dragonhealers and his poor dragon going practically out of his mind that there was Thread and he couldn't be up there fighting it, and goodness knows how long it was going to take the pair of them to get back into the pattern of the wing they were pretty new to in any case...

He tried to smooth his expression over before heading over to the Weyrleader's office for his now-weekly appointment to try and convince the man that he was a reformed case and could get back in the sharding air where he _belonged_.

"Have a seat," N'vanik said when he entered. Meeting with G'van was getting very old very fast.

G'van took a seat, trying to look bright and attentive, but his suppressed anger was obvious in the slightly excessive force with which he pulled out the chair and sat in it. He bit back a sarcastic comment and let N'vanik do the talking.

**Shouldn't have come to this wretched place,** he commented silently to his dragon.

}: They won't have us back, rider mine, you know that, :{ Gheleth reminded him. }: We've got to make the best of it here now. :{

"So another sevenday goes by. Learn anything yet?" N'vanik asked.

"Look," begged G'van with downcast eyes, looking up very slightly as he went on to give N'vanik the benefit of all the tired sincerity he could scrape up. "I'm broken, okay? I'll do whatever you ask. Right away. No trouble. No smart words. Just let me back in the air? Please?"

"What I want from you, G'van, is to show me that you care. That you care about your life, your dragon's life, and especially the lives of your wingmates." N'vanik studied him, wondering how sincere he was. "I don't want empty promises."

G'van continued to look dejected right up until N'vanik uttered the words 'your dragon's life'. Then he looked up from his carefully calculated submissive pose, and it was obvious that something had got through to him, as genuine anger showed through his normally guarded eyes. "Of course I sharding care about my dragon!" he exclaimed, putting his hands on the desk to steady himself as he glared at the Weyrleader. "What kind of rider do you think I am? It's you who's _torturing_ the poor thing, keeping him on the ground when we're perfectly capable of being up there in the sky fighting Thread like he was hatched to!" He calmed down ever so slightly as he processed the rest of the Weyrleader's words, or perhaps not calmed so much as got his expression back under control again. "And I care about my wingmates, too. I don't want to see anyone killed. And we're _understrength_. Surely the best way to help save their lives would be to let me join them?"

"_If_ I can trust that you won't be a risk up there," N'vanik said, unfazed by the outburst. "You can come back to drills, and we'll see if I can trust you to fly Fall."

G'van nodded seriously, subsiding back into his chair. "I won't let you down," he promised, with as much sincerity as he could muster.

That was more like it. "Good. Then I'll see you tomorrow."

With a brief nod, G'van stood and neatly pushed the chair back into place, then after a moment's hesitation to make certain that he was in fact dismissed and there was no 'one more thing', headed out of the office.

}: Drills tomorrow! :{ exclaimed Gheleth joyfully.

**Yeah, whatever,** replied G'van sourly as he headed off to his weyr, hoping to catch up on some sleep before he needed to make sure they didn't screw up.

}: Does that mean tonight's watch is cancelled? :{ asked Gheleth hopefully.

G'van subsided against a wall, sullen anger barely contained on his face. **We'd sharding better be. Why don't you ask that overgrown wherry about it?**

There was something of a mental sigh from his dragon, but he obediently relayed, }: Loseth, mine is very sorry but forgot to ask if we were still on watch tonight, do you know? :{

}:N'vanik says no watch, since you will need to be up for drills,:{ Loseth told him.

}: No watch! :{ relayed Gheleth happily. }: Time for sleep. :{

G'van let out a sigh of relief as he continued heading to his weyr. Maybe this wouldn't go so badly after all.
