**There was one good thing in the current situation**, Zelanka mused,
**that they now had a Lady Holder, which took some of the load off from her back.**
She was just returning from a session with her. She spotted a familiar figure ahead and quickened her pace to catch up. "Shadux! Where have you been hiding, I haven't seen you in sevendays!", she called, motherly reprimand in her voice.
"Things have been busy since we've found ourselves without a Steward," Shadux shrugged, stopping long enough to let her catch up to him. "And the new Lord Holder doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to appoint someone." Even though the assistant steward would have thought the choice was easy. After all, hadn't he been promised the Stewardship after Cyrek? His family had served Benaroy's for generations! But, then again, Zathris wasn't exactly of Amber Hills, was he.
"No, he doesn't seem to be. When you have a free evening, you should come over for a dinner," she agreed and continued on her own track of thought.
"Hmmm, yes, I'd like that," he said thoughtfully. It had been too long. "My evenings are freer now that I'm not chaperoning Mariss on her nightly walks."
"She went with her father, didn't she?" the question was mostly rhetoric.
"Yes, she did. She would never have dreamed of being far from his side." Especially not for Amber Hills, which saddened him, for he believed with all his heart that had she given it a chance, she would have loved it here.
"If she is that attached to her father, I wouldn't want to be her husband," Zelanka remarked.
"Well, she'll be nothing if not faithful. I don't think I'll ever meet another girl quite like her." It was odd just how much he missed her, especially considering how often they were at odds when she first arrived.
"I didn't know you liked her," Zelanka said, sounding bit offended that she had not been told of it.
"I don't," he protested, feeling rather defensive all of a sudden. "I just came to... respect her, I guess. But she used to annoy me like nobody else could."
"Ah-hah," she said with knowing smile.
"What?" Shadux asked, starting to feel slightly annoyed by that look in Zela's eye. "I walked with her so she wouldn't get herself in any more trouble. She just had a thing for walking at all times of the day."
"Well, she's no longer here. And you really should get married," she scowled at him.
"Shards, Zela, what did I do now? Your scolding me for not seeing you, you're scolding me for not being married... Are you just having a bad day?" If that was the case, he would rather not be the one she was taking it out on.
"I'm just being motherly," Zelanka laughed.
"Well, I'm not used to being mothered since my sister moved into her own house." Though he had plenty of women who seemed to want to fill that role. "I'm sorry, maybe I'm the one having a bad day."
"Looks like. You need to relax. And there's nothing more relaxing than my desserts," Zelanka said.
At that, Shadux smiled. "Do you happen to have any ready?"
"Not yet, but if you drop by at the evening..."
"Hmmm. Perhaps I shall have to do that. I don't think I have anything planned." He leaned forward and whispered. "Though I was thinking of going hunting for a wife this evening. Someone recommended that I might need one."
"Oh you rascal!" The headwoman laughed.
Shadux grinned, glad to be back on more amiable terms with the Headwoman. "All right, then I shall see you think evening?"
"You better not be late, or Petriv will eat everything," Zelanka threatened.
