Z'ku

Z'ku

"Do you have any plans for the evening?" Z'ku asked Meledei.

"I do, but what did you have in mind?" Meledei peered up from where
she was working on some hides and grinned up at her friend.

"Xemroth wants to go swimming. The water's too cold for my taste, but
I'm going down to the beach with him. I thought you and Elleth might
want to come along." He knew better than to make it sound like
anything but a friendly offer.

"It is rather cold." Still, the beach had other things that would
draw her to it. "And I'm afraid F'gol and I have plans. I'll be glad
to take you up on that some other time though."

Of course she had plans with F'gol. They always had plans with each
other. "Let me know when you have time, and I'll be sure to clear my
plans that day."

"F'gol might want to go to the beach." Meledei suggested it. She
felt bad in a way. Z'ku was her friend too. "We could all go
together, maybe ask some others from our class."

"No, that's alright. I was hoping for something quiet and relaxing. I
suppose I can do that better by myself." And he would probably end up
brooding about Meledei favoring a bluerider over him.

"Well, maybe we can get together some other time." Meledei supposed
she could understand that. "Maybe we can get together and play some
cards sometime."

"Sure. That would be nice." He had to force his smile. "Let me know if
you ever have a free evening."

"I will." Meledei had made a promise to Cosani that she would make
time for her, and Meledei would do the same for all her friends.
"Sooner rather than later."

"Ok." Being a middle child, he should be used to waiting for someone's
attention, but it was still hard.

"You can join us for dinner if you like." Meledei had a feeling he
was going to say no, but she offered it anyway.

"I wouldn't want to be in the way." The irony of it brought a small
smile to his lips.

"Nonsense." Meledei made a dismissive gesture with her hand. "We
always eat with other people, and it's always nice to have other
friends around."

Z'ku's smile turned wry. "F'gol doesn't like me."

"F'gol needs to get over himself sometimes." Meledei loved him, but
that didn't mean he was perfect and could improve in different ways.

He laughed. "Still, you deserve a pleasant dinner." It was the first
unselfish thought he'd had during the conversation.

"He's going to have to learn sometime." F'gol had his issues. He
could be very self centered. Meledei loved him anyway. "Tell you
what, why don't you have lunch with me tomorrow? My schedule's a bit
odd and won't coincide with his during lunch - that is, if you don't
mind waiting an extra hour. We can catch up."

"That sounds wonderful," he said, relieved that she wasn't going to
keep putting him off for days or sevendays.

"Good!" Meledei grinned, then jabbed him playfully in the chest.
"But you should try to get to know F'gol better. He has his good
points. You might even learn to like him."

"I've tried to be nice to him, but he seems determined not to like
me." If only because F'gol spent so much time around Meledei, Z'ku
tried to be civil to him.

"Maybe I should start hitting him upside the head." Meledei shook her
head and sighed. "I'm sorry Z'ku. He's rather moody. Hopefully
he'll grow out of it."

"With a wonderful influence like you, how could he not grow out of
it?" He couldn't understand how F'gol could be gloomy when he had
Meledei's full attention.

Meledei hoped so. She thought F'gol still had issues with not being a
harper, despite the time that had passed. Hopefully he would come to
realise what a great life he had, especially with Tealth. She smiled.
"Don't know about the wonderful influence, but thanks."

"You're welcome. I'll see you tomorrow, then?"

"Tomorrow." Meledei watched him leave, then turned back to her hides.
Z'ku had at least been a pleasant break, but it was time to get back
to the grind.
