Description: R'mer speaks to Qorri about moving into a new weyr.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik
E'nud had been a fine bronzerider. He had Impressed a few turns
before R'mer, and his experience fighting Thread had been invaluable to
a new rider in the wings. But, as was there was ample proof, experience
did not necessarily mean invincibility. Perhaps even a turn ago, R'mer
would have felt that asking move into a man's room so soon after his
death would be incredibly disrespectful. But he had learned quickly
that death was just another fact of life in the Weyr, and the living
always took priority over the dead. Besides, the view from the ledge
was not the best in the Weyr, but it was a far cry better than the one
he currently had and if he didn't move quickly, another rider would just
beat him to it.
"Excuse me, Headwoman, but may I speak to you?" R'mer asked, seizing the
opportunity as he saw her about to open the door to the weyr in
question. No doubt in order to see to his personal effects.
Qorri made it a point to see to it personally that all of the riders who
perished had their things seen to. She gave them out as requested or put
them in stores, but she always handled it herself. Straightening up
from where she was bending over, she turned to see the young rider.
"Aye?"
Suddenly R'mer felt a little ashamed. Would she think him callous, he
wondered. But if he didn't ask now, he was sure someone else would jump
in before him who didn't have any reserve. "Is someone scheduled to
move into this weyr once it's cleaned out?"
"Not yet." She wiped her hands on her skirt, surveying what was left.
There wasn't much.
He looked around at the stone walls. It wasn't a big weyr by any
measure, but he never needed much space for just himself. "I know I'm a
fairly young rider, and I can't say there's anything wrong with my
rooms, but, I would really like to move in here."
"Why?" Inside her head, she was measuring him up. Did he need this weyr?
Shards. She really did look stern, he thought as he wet his dry
lips with his tongue. "Well, ma'am, I like the view. It's closer to a
bathing room, and I don't mind stairs. I live alone, and I don't bring
people home much, so I don't need much space. The ledge is good sized,
and I ride a bronze, so I know Hanunth would like it."
She crossed her arms over her chest. "Send me a formal request and once
the place is cleared out, we'll let you know. As long as none of the
older ones want it, you'll probably be able to move in in a few days."
"A formal request?" he asked, shifting his weight. Though he was
reading better than he did when he first came, his writing still looked
like that of a child. It was still a source of embarrassment for him.
"Aye just need a record of it. Plus it helps me to remember." She loved
lists and written-down things. It made her calm.
R'mer shifted his feet. He was already running through the list of
people who he might go to in order to ask for help on it. The list was
extraordinarily short. "So I just have to write down everything I just
said to you? Just on a hide?"
"Really just your name, dragon color, turns, and the weyr you want. The
rest I can remember." She picked up one of the carisaks she had filled
and put it gingerly over her shoulder.
"Oh," his whole countenance brightened as he smiled his relief. "Sure.
I can do that. And do I just give it to you then?"
"Aye." Thinking she could carry more, she hoisted another carisak over
the other shoulder. It would take some time to get everything down, but
it was worth it.
It looked like a rather heavy load. "Can I help you with that?"
"'I've got this, but if you want to grab one of the others.." Qorri
definitely appreciated that.
R'mer was no stranger to pulling his own weight, and was only too happy
to do as she asked. He threw a sack over his shoulder and grabbed one
of the boxes as well. "Just tell me where to put them."
"A level down, in the cavern I use for storage of items that are
personal." When people had no family, she didn't know what else to do
with the drawings and mementoes kept.
"Maybe I should follow you." He wasn't that familiar with the
storerooms, and had no reason to go to the room where the dead riders'
effects were stored.
She nodded her agreement then left the weyr, wandering down through
the tunnels to the staircase. It didn't take them long to reach the room
but when they entered and she uncovered the glows, it was disconcerting.
There were trinkets and pictures, statues, and other memorabilia of past
lives.
R'mer also felt a little uneasy. "There sure is a lot of stuff in
here."
"I haven't been able to sell it," Qorri probably could have turned a
mark on behalf of the Weyr at some of the local gathers, especially for
the more interesting items. So far, though, she hadn't the heart to do
it. Perhaps the Weyrleader would know what to do.
She set her saks down and gestured for him to do the same. "Thanks."
It took him a moment to notice. He was lost looking around him at the
shelves full of mementos of riders lost. Would his things end up on one
of those ledges one day? "Oh, sorry," he finally muttered when he
realized she had been waiting for him.
"You're allright. I meant..thank you for going up there." She gave him a
rare soft look before she started to go through the carisak. "If you can
just stop by with that request sometime later in the day."
"Yes, ma'am, I will." He gave her a nod of thanks before making for the
door. R'mer didn't want to stay in that room and watch her unpack
E'nud's things. It made him feel too much like a scavenger picking over
the bones. "Thank you, ma'am."
