Description: K'deren and his daughter meet Azia for a picnic on the beach
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 4 of Turn 5
It was a lovely day for a picnic. Even Yennith thought that as she splashed about in the water. Azia watched her lifemate with no small concern, as she had taken a score on her wingtip just a sevenday before. A minor score, but one all the same.
**Love, be careful!** she thought as the large green took a particulairly
large dive.
}:I'm always careful. And the salt water will heal my wing:{ The green
took a dive just to prove that.
On the beach, Azia sighed and watched for K'deren's brown.
For a big man, K'deren could move surpisingly softly when he wanted, he came up behind the greenrider. "A quarter mark for them?"
So occupied with her green, Azia never heard the man until he spoke. Almost falling out of her sundress in shock, she spun around and then laughed. "You_nearly_scared me to death!" That deserved a playful slap on the shoulder.
"Then those thoughts must have been worth so much more," he said, before he
was cut short by something resembling a tornado, which when it stopped
proved to be a small child. "Da! The sea! Da!"
Azia laughed and leaned down. "Hello! And who are you?"
"'m Deralie," the child said before going shy and hiding behind her father.
"Hello Deralie, that's a lovely name. I'm Azia, and out there is Yennith."
She smiled and sat down in the sand.
"This little hatchling of mine," K'deren said with a fond smile. "I promised her she could go paddling with Donneth."
"Very good! Do you think we can go swimming with you and the dragons as
well? We have to be a bit careful with my green out there. If you see her
wing tip there," and she pointed to the paddling green, "she's got a small
injury on that tip. So maybe what will cheer her up is a little girl
playing with her. What do you think?"
Deralie looked to her father as she crept out to study the woman who was
talking. "Swimming?" she asked.
"Good job I brought these then." K'deren had been carrying a bag, and from
it he produced a float. "You need to hang onto this though."
"And when you get out, I've got these." Azia shook the bag beside her which had all sorts of picnic food.
"Shoes off first," K'deren told his daughter who seemed to be about to run
off into the water.
Azia watched the little girl, musing about the first time she saw the ocean. If only she had had a sensible father to tell her to take her shoes off, that day! She waited patiently for this sensible father to see his child's safety. Her own 'child,' Yennith, was doing fine, for all her injured wingtip.
A small bottom plopped itself down on the sands, feet sticking up in the air as K'deren took her shoes off. "Now you can go in the water, and make sure you don't go past Donneth or Yennith."
**Yennith, love, please watch the little girl closely** Azia was concerned
as the dragons were slashing about, happily making one another's
acquaintance.
}: You need not ask:{ Yennith broke off with the brown to paddle gently up
to where the girl was about to enter the water.
"She misses her mother at times like this. Vonalie would have guiven
anything to be able to do this," commented K'deren.
Azia nodded, waiting for him to do the talking. With a statement like that, the girl's mother was obviously dead. And this was K'deren's area to
explain, or not. Being Weyr born and raised, she too had seen more than her fair share of friends and lovers dead. If he wanted to talk about it, she was there. And if he didn't, she understood.
"When she's old enough, I'll tell her how much she loved her, and what
happened."
She nodded, and watched him. "How long ago did you lose her?"
"Almost three turns ago. Deralie was just old enough for Vonalie to go back
to her wing."
Azia just nodded and sighed. There was nothing she could add, the best
thing she could do was listen. Still watching him, she reached in her
basket and produced a bottle of wine. He could use a glass of the white.
"Got a glass for that?"
"Better than that, I've got two!" She grinned and produced two chunky
glasses, just the right size and shape for a picnic. "And for Deralie when
she gets out." She held up a sealed cup of juice.
"Redfuit juice?" asked K'deren.
"Pressed it myself! Of course Yennith_may_have helped a bit by sitting on a few." She smiled at him. "She's a lovely little girl, your Deralie."
"Try saying that when she gets you up in the middle of the night just after
threadfall."
Azia laughed. "At least I bet she doesn't snore so loud after said Fall
that you can't get to sleep at all!" She pointed out to her Yennith.
}:I do not snore:{
**Dearie, you're asleep, you ever know!**
At that the green huffed and dived, splashing water on the little girl.
"Yennith!" To K'deren, Azia said, "sorry about that, she's in a huff about
all her secrets coming out."
Deralie had given a squeal, but a squeal of delight. "I don't think she's
too upset, Deralie would be heading back this way if she was."
From her basket, Azia produced a small round of cheese and some fruit,
putting them in front of K'deren. "To make the wine go down better," she
teased.
"Wine, a pleasant conversation and good food. What more do we need?"
"Music," she said as straight faced as possible,
K'deren laughed. "Sadly the harper skills went to some of my siblings... I
guess well have to stick with conversation."
"Ah, that's lovely as well. And we can go swimming in a bit."
"So long as you don't mind the splashing of an almost four turn old who's
likely to want a water fight."
Azia tipped her sundress down a bit, revealing a swimming suit. "I'm ready, she doesn't scare me!"
"Lets go," K'deren couldn't resist a quick glance as he pulled his tunic
off.
"Okay then, race you!"
