Description: Kannoth is scored and Rhosyn works on him.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 12, day 12 of Turn 5
As the threadfall progressed, Rhosyn found herself running around the
Bowl more often. They weren't doing too badly up
there, for which she was grateful. At the beginning of the Pass,
things had been another story, for sure. While Orlaith sat
on the Sands, waiting for the eggs to be ready, Rhosyn did the only
thing she could do.
Every injured dragon that came through, she checked the severity. If
it was something minor, she allowed the others to deal
with it most of the time. With a cleaning, and numbweed, they could go
back to flying. And then a blue came through screaming.
Bringing her head up, she saw him. Orlaith came out of the grounds,
rising up to catch him. No longer gravid, she could fly as
she needed to. }:You are allright, we will help you:{ she told him,
bringing him down as Rhosyn rushed to help.
After she was done and the blue was settled somewhere to heal, she
walked away, looking like a mess. There was ichor all
over her tunic and pants. Rhosyn's hair had come loose and was in
strands around her face. She washed her hands in redwort
and then checked on the others to see how things were going. The fall
was almost over, by the position of the sun. "Let's hope
that there are no more."
A brown appeared low over the bowl, flying awkwardly. He made a rough
landing, his eyes whirling with pain. }:My wing!:{
**Orlaith!**
}:I have it:{
As her queen sent soothing thoughts to the brown, the Weyrwoman made
her way to the dragon. As others assisted the rider, she examined the problem.
"Numbweed please!" she instructed her helpers. Once he stopped moving, she
could get a better look at the problem.
R'masu slid off his dragon's neck and gave his muzzle a soothing pat
before going to see the damage. "How bad is it?" he asked the
Weyrwoman, a little nervous shake in his voice.
"Don't know yet...I need him to be still and extend his wing as much as he can
for me." Orlaith was busy trying to calm him down, so she'd let R'masu send the
request. She came forward slowly, not wanting the big brown to accidentally hurt
her in his thrashing. Helping hands delivered the numbweed.
**Can you extend your wing?** R'masu asked. Kannoth was in pain and
shaken, but he wasn't panicking. The brown obediently extended his
wing, although he pulled it back a little with a wince of pain. The
scoring was on the end of his right wing and it hurt too much to
extend it all the way.
"That's the best he can do. Hopefully he can stretch it more when the
numbweed kicks in." R'masu felt his heart hammering in his chest and
tried to calm himself. Worrying wasn't going to help his dragon.
"Thank you Kannoth." When the wing was there so she could reach and touch
it, it was easy to see where the score was. Pointing to a candidate nearby, she
asked for sutures and scissors. "Let me know when the numbweed has
done its job." She would have to stretch the wingsail and sew it together
since the other tissue had been eaten by the thread. Luckily there had
been no bone involved.
Kannoth's eyes started to whirl slower and the tension in his body
relaxed a little. Slowly, the brown stretched his wing a little
farther. "The pain is starting to fade," R'masu told Rhosyn. He eased
a little as his dragon did. This wasn't their first scoring, although
they hadn't had one this bad in a while. Not since those earlier days
of the Pass ... He swallowed and put those thoughts out of his mind.
The brought the tray with the things she wanted. Rhosyn scrubbed again
quickly, then went forward and set to work. She had someone pull her hair
back again since she couldn't risk a strand getting in her vision. "Allright..
a pull here...and a pull there... Come and hold this here for me." One of the
dragonhealing apprentices assisted her, following instructions. "Kannoth,
you're doing fine."
Once it was all stitched together, she wrapped the wing up so that Kannoth
could no longer open that part of the wingsail. It had to heal and if he tore
the fragile bit apart again, it would be for naught. She stepped back
to admire her
handiwork. "R'masu, make sure he understands that he won't be able to move
that. We'll need to look at it again in a sevenday or so, though you'll probably
be grounded for a bit."
}:Kannoth you can go rest now:{ Orlaith told him, knowing that the shock of the
experience would be tiring.
}:Thank you, Orlaith.:{
"Thank you, Weyrwoman." R'masu felt weariness sinking into him, and
not all of it was from Kannoth. "You have a fine, steady hand."
"You're welcome. I'm glad to do my duty and make sure the Weyr has new dragons
and keeps its old ones." They were all hers, whether they knew it or
not. She put a hand on R'masu's shoulder. "Clean up, eat, and rest. Then report to
your Wingleader to let him know what happened."
R'masu nodded. "Thank you, again." **Let's go find you a spot to
sleep.** The brown wasn't going to be able to make it up to his weyr
for a while. He patted Kannoth's leg and headed off toward the dragon
infirmary.
If she was a mess before, Rhosyn showed her true colors just then. Her
tunic was mostly ichor green with splotches of brown sand. Her hair had once again
begun its escape and she was glad to hear that the fall was over. Rubbing her hands
together, she went to get a bath herself.
