Description: Zanie has a meeting with Mosler about her classes and her future.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 9, day 13 of Turn 3
Zanie was grinning widely as she arrived in Mosler's office, giving the door a cheerful knock before poking her head in. "I'm sorry I'm late, Hallsecond! Do you still have time to see me?"
"Of course, come on in. I've been running late all day, so you're really just on time." he welcomed her in with a smile.
"Perfect!" Slipping inside, Zanie shut the door behind her and took a seat in front of his desk. "I haven't learned the trick of convincing the apprentices to listen to me yet. It took me forever to get them quieted down enough for lessons this morning... but I guess they are pretty young."
"You're very good with them, not everyone has the patience for the junior apprentices." Mosler knew that he didn't. He much preferred journeymen who would listen quietly and only ask _intelligent_ questions.
"Well, I _thought_ they'd think I was old and intimidating and be
easier to handle than the older ones." Granted, she wasn't all _that_ much older than the older apprentices, so teaching them was somewhat out of the question. "Maybe I need to practice frowning at them."
"Who's giving you trouble?" Mosler said as a frown started to form on his face, "I'll talk to the Master of Apprentices about them."
Zanie regretted her words almost instantly, and shifted uncomfortably. "Oh, it's not a problem. Really."
Mosler studied her face for a moment, he really did prefer his
journeymen to handle their own classroom problems, before starting again. "All right then, do you have any interesting news to relay about your _enthusiastic_ pupils?"
Relieved that she wouldn't have to tell the Hallsecond that his son had been acting up, Zanie shook her head. "We're doing basic history right now... I can understand that they find it a little boring, but I try to make it interesting and exciting."
"Really, how so?" Mosler asked, always interested in new methods of learning.
"Just by making it fun," Zanie replied with a shrug. "History can be really interesting if you know _why_ you have to learn it. They need to know about the history of our craft so they can appreciate the way things are, so I try to tell the really interesting stories, not just the dates and times."
Mosler nodded in agreement, "Good move, some of the journeymen who have taught this class for years forget the _fun_ part of learning."
Zanie perked up under his praise, her smile growing. "You know, I
really like teaching. I mean, I know I still have a lot to learn... and I _am_ interested in cartography and like it, but..." She hesitated, knowing her father would pull his hair out if he heard what she was about to say.
"But..." he asked, his eyebrow quirked.
"But I wouldn't mind being one of the journeymen who stays at the Hall and spends their time teaching."
He hadn't been expecting that sort of reply from her. Zanyar had told him on many occasions his daughter had aspirations of Master's knots.
"Well, I'm glad to hear that teaching is something you enjoy, and I'll be more than happy to keep you in the teaching rotation." Mosler said before adding, "But you realize that if you stay at the Hall it will be harder for you to advance to Senior Journeyman, and impossible to attain Master's status?"
Zanie shifted a little uncomfortably. "I'd like to travel a little... I _do_ want to become a Senior Journeyman. But I never thought I'd love teaching this much."
"Well, you must just have a bit of harper blood in you!" he joked with a kind smile, "And you're young enough to change your mind twenty times still." He added as he jotted down some notes, "I'll put you down as wanting full time, and we'll see what we can do when we start making up the next rotation."
"Thank you!" Zanie would just figure out how to tell her father about this slight adjustment later.
"Anytime." Mosler replied standing up from behind his desk, "Come by and see me again soon."
