Daishii would be glad when she got done with the crutches. It was bad
enough that she didn't have a lot of upper body strength. What made it
worse was that Kisiloth didn't seem to understand that she had to be
careful around her lifemate. The little green had knocked her over
several times already. "Pierka, are you ready for lunch?" She asked.
She hadn't spoken to many of her fellow Weyrlings enough to not feel
bad if she had to ask them to help her with her tray. Pierka, on the
other hand, was rapidly becoming her best friend. They stayed up
passed curfew giggling about cute boys, they gossiped about the goings
on of the Weyr... Daishii had never had a female friend that she liked
so much.
"Absolutely!" she answered. She was doing her best to help with
Daishii's lifemate as well as bonding with her own. Other in the
weyrling classmates were doing their best to pitch in as well but the
larger share fell to her as it should. Though the smaller blond didn't
really have an issue with it in the least.
She was experiencing friendship in a whole new way and truth be told,
loving every minute of it. "Let's hit it. I'm starving."
"Great," Daishii said with a smile. She hoisted herself up with her
crutches before double checking to make certain that Kisiloth was
still sleeping. "I should be getting off of these in a day or so," she
commented. "At least that's what the healers said when I visited them
the other day. I really can't wait. You've been so wonderful in
helping me get around and tend for Kisiloth."
Pierka laughed and tossed it of with "I expect you'll do the same for
me sometime." But inside she was glowing at the praise. "Are you going
to see them tomorrow?"
"Yeah, they're checking the wound, and then we'll see how I can walk
on it. If all goes well, I can take it easy for about a sevenday and
then I should be back to fully healed. It's amazing, Kisiloth doesn't
even remember it anymore. I know they had short memories, but you'd
think she'd remember that." Personally though, Daishii was glad the
green dragon had forgotten.
"Oh great." She knew her friend chaffed at the constraints her injury
had put on her. "Liddith told me how broken up she'd been when it
happened. It's good she doesn't remember." She smiled. "We'll have to
go swimming with them once you have that think off."
"So let's plan on it tomorrow then!" Daishii said, hobbling along on
her crutches. "At least I'm building my upper body strength for
throwing about firestone sacks," she said ruefully. "It's a shame I
haven't conned one of the cute boys in our class to fawn over me while
I was stuck in bed though."
Pierka just laughed and shook her head. None of the cute boys Daishii
seemed to obsess over ever really looked at her though they did look
at Daishii quite often. Maybe it was because the other green rider was
older and more... well curved. She was tempted to ask the other girl
to conn one of them for her too. But she was sure her beautiful
Liddith would do it for her sooner or later. "Tomorrow it is."
"I think I might miss a little bit of class tomorrow though, so I'll
need to go over notes with you a bit," Daishii said. Arriving at the
Dining Caverns, she looked around a bit. They were early still, so it
wasn't as packed as it normally was. "Oooh, looks like something other
than stew today!" She exclaimed. It seemed like recently that was all
they were getting.
"Sure" she smiled. "I will take extra good notes." Her eyes followed
Daishii's "Ohh looks like fish, one of the boats must have come in
with a good catch!" She walked up to the line and took two trays while
her friend followed. They'd perfected the routine over the last few
weeks while her friend limped behind her in line.
"Oooh, I love fish," Daishii raved. "If I had to eat herdbeast again I
was going to turn into a dragon!" She lamented. "Looks like they made
that delicious crusty bread to go along with it."
"Yeah," Pierka said with a smile, "and rice." She loved rice
especially with that special salty sauce they served with the fish.
"Yeah, we used to eat rice all the time at home when I was a girl. But
here it seems like it's always tubers, tubers, tubers. How many tubers
do they grow that they have so many for us to eat?" she complained.
"Not to mention all the ones I peeled as punishment while I was a
candidate."
Pierka hadn't been here at the Weyr all that long before she'd
Impressed so she hadn't had to peel as many tubers as Daishii
obviously had. "I get a little tired of tubers at every meal too. She
grabbed them both a healthy helping of the rice. "We must have gotten
a shipment from the east. They grow good rice over there." She stopped
and blinked **Now where did_that_ come from?**
Noticing her friend stop speaking, and stare intently at something,
she did the same. "What is it?" She asked, trying to identify what
Pierka was referring to.
Pierka's eyes raised in awe. "I remembered something," she said softly.
"What do you remember? Did you go to the east as a child?" Daishii
asked, excited for her friend. She knew that Pierka's memory loss was
something that caused her friend a bit of concern, and she was glad
any time Pierka seemed familiar with something.
"Well I was shorter than I am now," she giggled. "If that's possible."
She shook her head "It's just a vague image really... and a voice."
"A man's voice or a woman's?" Daishii asked curiously. Perhaps it was
the voice of one of her parents, or someone that she had been friends
with before. "Could you understand what they spoke of?"
"It's a man's voice but he's talking to someone else... something
about the rice crop. This is really odd." She was happy at the memory
but it was all very fuzzy.
"Interesting," Daishii mused for a moment. "Have you thought about
starting a journal of all the things that you remember? I could
probably get an empty book for you, if not make one myself?" She
offered. "It might help you to read over everything you've
remembered."
"Oh that's a great idea," she exclaimed. "I'll bet if I can put it all
together maybe I'll remember some of it someday." She grinned at her
friend. "That's a wonderful offer."
"I'll get ahold of one for you, I can probably call in a favor from
one of the other apprentices," Daishii said. "I think it would help
you a lot with remembering. I used to write down my dreams when I
first started as an apprentice, it's interesting looking back now and
seeing what I used to dream about."
"I think you're right," she mused. "Do you think it would really help
me remember more?"
"Sure. It always helped me to remember things that I needed to know
for my apprentice classes. If nothing else, it will prevent you from
forgetting these little bursts of memory that you get from time to
time," Daishii said.
Pierka began making some mental notes of the first things she wanted
to write about just so she wouldn't forget. She was pretty good about
retaining information once she'd learned something new. The memories
that had just surfaced were like something new. "Yeah," she smiled at
her friend. "Thanks Daishii!"
