Momentary Calm

Writers: Heather K, Len
Date Posted: 18th August 2011

Characters: E'ril, Gelaren
Description: E'ril meets Gelaren and has a nice chat with a bit of flirting thrown in!
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 3 of Turn 6

Gelaren about jumped out of his skin when his charge, Kal, ignored his
request and went streaking through the water to the blue dragon who
had just landed in the ocean. "Kal! Stop! You have to ask first!"

The young dolphin with the spots on his belly ignored the journeyman
and leapt over the blue in a high arch.

}: Well that was fast. Hello fishy fishy fishy.:{ Dawenth said gleefully
as the dolphin sprayed him with water during his antics. For whatever reason
the blue dragon was reduced to the baby talk of a hatchling when in
the presence of
the creatures. It was one of the times that E'ril was immensely glad no one
but him could hear the blue's chatter.

**I've told you a thousand times. They aren't fish.** E'ril's comment was lost
on his lifemate as the blue was now frolicking in the waves. E'ril settled
himself on the beach, sitting on a log letting his feet dangle in the water as
the tide came.

He turned when he heard the voice cry out. He spotted what he could only assume
was the dolphin's partner running towards them. He waved him down and
called out, "It's okay. Trust me, you made his day."

"Oh, thank the bloody shell for that! He seems to annoy more dragons
than he pleases." Gelaren walked up to the bluerider in a slower pace
than he had been going, now that he knew they weren't bothering the
dragon and rider. "Kal's always too curious for his own good!"

E'ril grinned, "Can't stop them from being what they are I guess. Dawenth
there just loves the creatures. Between you and me so not to hurt his pride
he loves to baby talk the dolphins and to pretend he is one when there's a
pod around. He says it gives him perspective and makes him appreciate being
a dragon more." He laughed hard at the memories.

"Baby talk?" Gelaren laughed at that, before sitting down next to the
handsome man. "How old is he?"

"Ha, old enough to know better. No, Dawenth is about 20 Turns old, if my math
is correct. He still likes to relive his hatchling days every now and again.
Like I said, best not to spread this fact around. He would not be pleased for
every green in the Weyr to catch wind of his soft spot." As the dolphineer
sat down, E'ril took him in with his eyes. He looked slightly younger than
himself but age didn't matter to him. He had gorgeous eyes however and the
fit, lean form of a frequent swimmer. E'ril put out his hand accompanied
with a friendly smile, "I'm E'ril by the way."

"Gelaren, glad to meet you." The younger man took the bluerider's in
his. "20 turns, eh? He doesn't look it." Nor did E'ril, he mused to
himself.

Taking a good look at what he could see of his lifemate in the water, E'ril
had to agree. There may be a tinge of grey on his light underbelly and on his
scar but those were the only signs of aging any where on his blue. **I take
full credit for that, by the way.** There was no response.

"Well thank you. Maybe it's his coloring that hides his age," he replied and
then turned the conversation to the Dolphineer. "So how long have you and
your partner been working together?"

"Oh, not long. Kal's only about two turns old, I think. We're trying
to ease him into the training but as you can see every time he sees a
dragon, well..." He nodded to the dolphin playing with Dawenth.
"You from this Weyr?"

"Right, right," he nodded along as the Dolphineer explained about his
charge. "I wasn't born at the Weyr but Dawenth was hatched here. I'm from
the Emerald Falls territory actually. You?"

"Whow, really? I am too!" The dark haired man sat up straighter at
the mention of his home hold.

"Small world, eh?" E'ril smiled. He felt somehow comforted by the fact
that this man was from the same stock he was. "So how'd you get it in
your head that you wanted to be a Dolphineer then? Emerald Falls isn't
beachfront property."

"Well, I_did_come on search originally, but when that didn't work out,
I asked to come here. That was turns ago now." He smiled in
remembrance. "You ever miss home then? I don't."

E'ril considered that for a moment. His home and Dolphin Cove were two
very different places. At times he did miss the wide open spaces of his
family's farm but here, he had Dawenth, his job, his friends, his life.
"Nah, not really. If I ever need a reminder I just pop in for a visit
to the Hold. That sets me straight and then I couldn't be happier to
breathe salty air."

"Me too." He grinned and gave the rider a cheeky wink. "Life for
boys like us is much better in or close to the Weyr. I just can't
believe I managed to survive 19 turns in that place. Coming here was
like a dream come true."

**You have no idea,** E'ril thought to himself. He smiled at the man's wink.
"And now that's all in the past. Perhaps you'd like to meet me at Weyr sometime?
We could toast our good fortune at ending up here with some good local wine.
What do you say?" The invitation sounded innocent enough and the bluerider
felt a flutter of nervousness when he asked, though he wasn't sure why.

"That'd be lovely. That sort of time did you have in mind?" Gelaren
did enjoy one rather large perk of being so close to the Weyr, the
availability of many beautiful blue and green riders.

"My schedules a little crazy considering I have to wait until the little
ones go to bed. How about this coming restday? Say around the ninth candlemark?"
He figured that would give him enough time to come up with something to say
to the man. He felt an odd sense of calm with this man, something he hadn't
felt in a while and very much needed. Calm wasn't exactly part of his job
description.

"Sounds brilliant! We going anywhere in particular or just staying
here?" Gelaren schooled his face not to show too much glee at the
thought of a date with such a handsome bluerider. It was more
dignified to show at least an ounce of reserve.

E'ril whistled and waved needlessly for Dawenth to come ashore and shake off
so they could make the short flight back to their weyr. He hadn't really
thought of anything past his invitation so the location was a little fuzzy in
his mind. "We'll just have to wait and see. It really was a pleasure
meeting you,Gelaren. And I know Dawenth enjoyed your Kal. Until we
meet again," he quickly
placed a hand on the dolphineer's shoulder in parting and smiled softly at him.
Giving a quick squeeze, he let him go and climbed atop his waiting
blue. Stepping away from the man so as not to blast him with sand,
Dawenth made a
running start and then took to the air. E'ril sighed, already feeling
the pull of
duty come back into his body. The momentary calm just as quickly as
the dolphineer's
form on the beach had.
