Ishek sighed as he sat at the desk. It didn't really feel like his yet, nor did the Hold. He supposed he was still somewhat coming to terms with it all, becoming the Lord Regent of Garnet Valley. He wasn't entirely familiar with the place itself yet, nor with everything that needed to be done. What he did know, however, indicated that there was much work that _needed_ to be done. That was fine with him. He knew about putting a Hold back together. It would be hard work, but it would be familiar work. He only wished he had a companion to help see him through it, as Shama had once done.
But nevermind that. He did have a job to do, and he was going to do it.
Calling Yimas to his side- not that it was particularly hard to do, as the brown lump had been sleeping on the windowledge- he affixed a note requesting that Penryn come see him to the brown's leg. **Find Penryn.**
he thought, giving his brown a mental image of the Steward. It didn't come easily to him, not yet, but as time went on Ishek knew it would be easier to visualize the people of this Hold in order to send the flit to them.
Yimas went /between/ and started his search for his target.
Penryn responded immediately. It was his first summons from the new Lord Holder. He straightened his tunic as he stood outside Lord Ishek's door. Taking a deep breath he knocked, and at the Lord's call he opened the door. "You asked to see me, sir?"
Ishek nodded. "Have a seat." he offered. "Are you doing well today?"
"Yes, sir, thank you," the new Steward nodded. "Did you sleep well last night?"
"I was fine." he lied. Ishek tried to suppress a grimace, but it flashed quickly across his face. "I had a few dreams." he admitted after a moment. "To be expected in a new place, I suppose."
"Yes, I suppose that's true. Were your rooms comfortable enough sir? Is there anything more need?"
"More than comfortable." he replied. Having been raised in a smaller hold, he was still at a loss in the larger place. "Mostly I wanted to talk to you about the state of the Hold." he said. "I'm afraid that I'm going to need catching up on so many things...quite frankly, I'm not sure where to start, even."
"I understand, sir." At least Penryn had been living and working in the Hold before he had been put in charge. It must be daunting to just walk into it fairly blind. "Perhaps a tour would be helpful?"
"I would appreciate that very much." Ishek replied. "It would spare me the embarrassment of getting lost, after all."
"And it's easy to get lost," Penryn nodded, "if you weren't raised here.
Garnet Valley Hold was originally a network of caves, after all, that were enlarged and made hospitable. However, there are tricks to learning your way around. No two hallways look the same, at least."
"That will help me a lot." Ishek said, grateful for that fact. "What are some of the ways to distinguish the halls? Anything in particular to look for in certain places, or is it a trick your eye picks up over time?"
"Well, when they carved out the halls, they decorated each one differently. If you learn the decorations you will learn where you are." Penryn had always been amazed at the craftmanship of the masons who build the Hold.
"That's impressive." Ishek remarked, amazed as well. "But surely there are hundreds of halls here- they decorated them all?" He knew he might have sounded repetetive, but it was fascinating, and different from the smaller hold where he grew up. Decorations weren't as common there, nor used for the same purposes.
"Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that there were _hundreds_ of halls, Lord Ishek, though I'm sure at first it will seem that way." The Hold probably would be rather daunting to someone who had not been raised there. "As they carved out the Hold, according to the histories, they added small decorative touches to the halls and rooms. Even in this room and your quarters. It's one of the things that makes Garney Valley unique, I think."
"That's amazing." Ishek remarked. "I've admired the buildings from etching the Hold out from the caves, as opposed to some other Holds in the South, but to decorate it as well... they must have put so much work into here. It's an impressive place." And he still couldn't believe he was Holding it.
The steward smiled. "If you would allow me, I would show it to you now."
