Sitting at his usual table, the healer picked up his glass of wine and
smelled it
before he sipped, rolling it around his tongue. That was a good turn.
Smiling, he
leaned back in his seat and watched the tavern women walk around.
Keayd rested his chin against his palm and sniffed the glass appreciatively.
"T'is
a good vintage," he said.
"Aye, and I have the privilege of having gotten it for the half the marks by
successfully
delivering a first son." He grinned, his brows going up for a moment before
he took
another drink.
"Perks of the craft no doubt," Keayd chuckled. "Remind me to invite you to
taste my experiments someday."
"Someday and yes I better get perks for being on call most of the time." He
didn't enjoy being woken at night when he was needed, even if he did
understand it.
"Oh, yes, there's that too. Good thing I'm not a healer," Key grinned. "I
just love my
nightly sleeps." He and Chupsin had come to know each other after the
Vintner hall
moved to Amber Hills hold. His clubfoot caused all kind of problems and made
him
seek healers' help often. Since they were both unmarried journeymen, they
had struck
something akin to a friendship.
"Course, now that I have nurse to check the invalids at night, I get to
sleep a bit more.
She wakes me up if I need to go out for something." He waggled his brows,
wondering
what Keayd would think of Yanley.
"Oh? Who?" Keyad asked.
"Lady Yanley herself," he grinned.
"Wow. How did that happen? I just can't imagine a lady of Blood working in
the infirmary,
up to elbows in blood and other nasty stuffs," Keayd said and asked.
"Well she approached me actually and I tried it. It turned out to be a good
thing and
she is very helpful with the women. You know, birthings and all that. Now,
I'm going
to train her to be a proper nurse, which is quite useful." Chupsin was
grateful of any
intelligent help he could find.
"She sounds exceptional," Keayd said. All the rumours considering her had
spread to
the Vintner hall too.
"She's a wellbred lady for sure. It's a shame what happened, though
personally I'd
like to examine her myself." Chupsin had already been thinking about it.
Key chuckled. "Well, I haven't met her so I can't say anything about that."
"Hmmm come by tomorrow for me to see about that thing and she'll be there,"
he winked,
knowing Keayd's regular appointment wasn't for another few sevendays.
"I just might, unless some apprentice creates another crisis to solve. Did I
tell you
about the one with mixed up barrels?" Keayd replied.
"No?" he inquired as he sipped his drink.
Keayd launched into telling a funny story of how Woodcraft Hall's
Hallmaster's finest
and most expensive birthday wine ended up going to a poor holder who thought
he was
getting vinegar for preserving vegetables. Of course, the vinegar had ended
up at
the Hallmaster's table.
Chupsin chuckled for a moment after finishing off his own wine. "Oh good
job. I wonder
who got the kick for that one?" he mused.
"The one who mixed up the cargo manifests," Key replied with an amused grin.
"Naturally. Had to be a seacrafter." Grinning, he saw the candles get lower.
"I suppose
it might be time for bed, old man." Chupsin got up and wiped off his
trousers.
"Yeah, it's late all right," Key agreed. He got up a bit stiffly. The long
time sitting still had
made his bad leg go to sleep.
"Same time next time, different place?" Chupsin asked as he started to head
out.
"All right. Goodnight," Keayd replied.
