"Whoa!" Kaiafel cried, his eyes wide with surprise as they fixed on the
greenrider's stomach. "She got _big_!"
"Son, that's no way to greet an adult," U'kaiah said sternly, though he
could well understand the boy's reaction. Every time he saw Tavia now
her growing stomach was the first thing that drew his eye. Still, he
was at least trying to instill some manners in his son.
"Sorry," the boy mumbled, his eyes lifting to hers as he gave a little
wave. "Hi, Tavia."
An amused smile lit her eyes as she looked back at the boy. "Hello
Kaiafel," she replied. "I made some of your favorite cookies." She
expected him to take off and find the dish she had put on her small
table with a couple of warm ones. Meanwhile she greeted the
bronzerider with a warm smile. "Good to see you."
"You _are_ getting big, you know," U'kaiah said softly with a grin
tugging at his lips. He laid a hand on her belly as he leaned in to
kiss her softly. "Soon as we're finished washing the dragons I'll take
him back to his mother and we can have the evening to ourselves."
"Entirely your fault," she grinned back with a twinkle in her eye and
a playful tap on his arm. "But I like your plan. We can used a nice
evening." Truly she didn't mind having Kaiafel around. He was a
typical boy and the kind of weyrbrat she'd been at his age. "Caught
any tunnel snakes recently," she asked him as she walked back into the
main area.
"I don't look for tunnel snakes anymore," he said as he reached for
another cookie from the basket.
"He's moved on to firelizards," U'kaiah explained as he stepped up
behind the greenrider, looping an arm around her waist. "I keep telling
him that he's too young, but he has decided he will sell them if he
finds them."
"You can't sell tunnel snakes," Kaiafel pointed out with an aire of
authority.
She nodded and smiled. "Of course," she agreed. "Tunnelsnakes don't
like to be petted much and can't carry a message at all." She put her
arm on top of U'kaiah's where it rested on top her belly and leaned
back against him. She was finding the need for closeness grew as she
got farther along. Not that she'd ever make demands on him. That
wasn't in her makeup, but she'd make darn certain he knew how much she
did need him.
She squeezed his hand. "I think that's enough cookies for now. I have
a few packed for you to take with you. But now..." she reached into
the cupboard and pulled out her bucket with her brush and paddle and
set the sweetsand and crock of oil next to it. "I believe you have a
little work to do? I know Sawauth has been waiting for you all day."
There was a snort from the outer weyr.
Kaiafel's eyes lit up as he reached for the tools for his favorite past
time. It didn't matter what color the dragon, though to be honest, he
prefered bronzes and golds. "Can I wash _all_ of her by myself?"
"Well, I can help a _little_, can't I?" U'kaiah chuckled, taking the
brush himself. "The sooner we get her done, the sooner you can run down
the beach looking for firelizards." And the sooner he could spend time
with Tavia alone.
}:And the sooner I can admire her beautiful hide,:{ Kalamath
interjected.
"I'll follow you down," she said. Then she grabbed her much smaller
kit so Glory could have her bath and oil while U'kaiah and Kaiafel saw
to the dragons. Sensing her person's images of a bath the little gold
yawned on her high perch and stretched like a feline. "Let's go," she
smiled and she floated down to Tavia's shoulder with a chirp and
caress.
"Shall we ride down or would walking be easier?" U'kaiah asked as he
laced his fingers with hers, his eyes drawn once more to her growing
belly. He couldn't imagine that getting up even onto a green's back
would be an easy fete for her in this state.
Tavia chuckled. "I think I'll just walk down. The walk is good for me
anyway. I'm not getting any training tossing firestone sacks these
days." Truth be told it was getting awkward more than difficult but
that would change soon and walking up a couple of flights wasn't that
difficult. Her eyes unfocused for a second then she said. "Kaiafel can
ride her down if he wants. She volunteered."
"Sounds like a good idea," U'kaiah grinned, liking the idea of taking
the longer way down with her. He leaned down to give her a soft kiss.
"Just let me make sure he's strapped in right. I'll be right back.
Don't leave without me or I might get lost."
She drank in the kiss and leaned against the wall when he let her go.
She was very very glad they would have a little alone time later.
"I'll wait right here."
