The humming filled the air. A sound he'd heard before, many times, but never had it meant so much. Standing on the hot stands, with the expectant crowd of weyrfolk and dragons staring rapt at the eggs and the circle of nervous Candidates, Izaronin felt the weight of all those hundreds of eyes. He felt light-headed and dizzy, mind blank of all the helpful advice his mentors and elders had bestowed upon him.

He almost felt sick with excitement that held an undercurrent of doubt and dread. What if...no. He wouldn't dare complete that thought which might plant the seed of failure in his mind. He would impress. His lifemate was here...had to be here...

Izaronin looked at his fellow Candidates and offered a smile to those who met his eye, hope and encouragement in the gesture. At least, that's what he meant to convey. He wasn't at all sure if that's what he accomplished.

Suddenly, it no longer mattered. The first egg cracked, then the second, and on, the newborn dragonets crawling out on the sands and avidly searching. A green dragonet knocked into him and shoved him aside, intent on her search. A brown lifted its head and looked at him, then away. A blue moved to the boy beside him and the pair made connection. Izaronin felt his heart begin to race, the pulse almost drowning out the constant murmur of the crowd, punctuated with the cracking of shell and the cries of those on the sands.

{I'zar?}:

He looked down. Into the whirling eyes of a shining dragonet. "Zhenireth?"

{Yes. I'zar. I am hungry now.}: The bronze nudged his shocked lifemate, then stared to follow the others off the sands. I'zar shook his head and caught up, all worry and doubt vanished. He was grinning when he accepted the prepared meat for his dragon and saw to Zhenireth's first meal. Once the dragonet was sated and settled, I'zar looked up to see his parents standing off to the side.

Meliza ran over and embraced her son, tears in her eyes. His father was only slightly more reserved, and put a hand on the boy's shoulder.
"Congradulations, Izaronin...or what is it now?" R'niaen asked with a proud grin.

"I'zar, father." I'zar smiled up at him. "And this is Zhenireth." He placed a hand on the little bronze's head and scratched at his eye ridges. Meliza and R'niaen smiled down at their son, then left the pair to one another.

"A bronze, R'niaen..." Meliza wiped the tears from her eyes.

"Aye, the little rogue! Who knew?" R'niaen put his arm around her and lead her to the celebrations that were already begining.
