Description: The two of them build a sand hold together.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 6, day 2 of Turn 6
She could go to the beach as long as there was an adult to watch her.
It was also and endless source of amusement for the young girl. Today,
she was playing in the sand, making castles. "Allright, now I need a
bridge. Hm." Looking around, she tried to figure out how she might
accomplish this.
"Hey there." Irabel greeted the little girl as she drew up to her on
the beach. She was still dripping, having just emerged from the
water. The dolphineer grinned down at the child and crouched down.
"And what are you making?"
"A big Hold that can have everybody," she announced as her small hands
continued to mold the sand. "Bel, do you know how to make a bridge?" She
looked back at the adult hopefully.
"Hm, bridges are pretty hard, but I can try and help if you want."
Irabel sat down fully in the sand. She didn't mind it getting all over
her - she was quite used to it. "The sand will do better if we make
sure it's pretty wet."
"Oh. I have water in my pail." She offered the bucket that she used
sometimes to collect sea creatures in and shells to show Jylanya. Her
little hands were already covered in sand and grit and her dress was
rather filthy.
"Good, because we're going to need it. Okay, first, I find it easier
to build a lump of sand and then kind of use my hands to sculpt it into
the shape that I want. So let's start there. Where do you want the
bridge?"
She pointed to the where the door was. "Over there, and then I'm going
to pour water in the hole." Delighted, she began to use shells for
windows. There were a lot of windows in her hold.
"Excellent spot." Irabel agreed and she crawled over to get a better
angle. She began to carefully pile up sand, scooping it, dipping it in
the water, then placing it on time. She smushed it down, making sure
it was all patted together and then added more. When she got a good
pile, she put her hand about a couple of inches lower than the topmost
part. "About this high do you think?"
"Uh huh," Vee answered helpfully. She considered other decorations.
Grabbing a handful of the seaweed she'd collected, she began to rip
it into bits to make into grass. Sprinkling it around the building, her
hands remained steady. "If you were a Lady, would ya live here, huh?"
"I like the water and I like the beach. This hold would be _perfect_
for me to live in if I were a lady." Irabel chuckled softly and began
to whittle down the sand, sculpting it into a more bridge like shape.
"It's a very lovely hold."
"I think I'll call it Gemstone Hold," she pronounced. Veerona had to
have heard that word somewhere since it wasn't something she'd come up
with on her own. "I've never met a real Lady," she whispered, admitting
the secret.
"Neither have I." Irabel added her own admission softly as she finished
up the bridge. "Gemstone Hold sounds lovely. Now I wish I was a Lady
so I could live here!"
"Darcil says holds are bad," Vee remarked, echoing the sentiment she'd
heard from some other hallfolk.
"Oh really?" Irabel wasn't surprised. There were some Weyrfolk who
held to such sentiments. She didn't particularly agree with that.
"Why is that?"
"He says they hurt people there and you can't do what you want," Vee
didn't really understand a lot of the whys. It had mostly gone over her
head.
"Well, in some cases that might be true, but that's not the _whole_
truth." Obviously, some people didn't care about finding out the
_whole_ truth. Irabel didn't care for such narrow-minded thought.
"And not all holds are like that."
Sitting back, she looked at her finished hold and beat some sand from
her hands. "Bel, I'm hungry. Do you think it'll be okay?" If it rained,
all of their work would be gone. Veerona looked up at the sky,
thinking.
"As long as it doesn't rain, it should be." Irabel glanced up at the
sky as well. "I think it will be all right. If you're hungry, you
should go eat."
"Allright." She stood up and tried to brush some of the sand from her
dress. "Thank you for playing with me." Trying to remember her manners,
Veerona tried to think if there was something else she was supposed to
do.
"Oh it was a pleasure, Veerona." Irabel grinned and gave a small
wave. "I'm sure I'll see you later." The dolphineer pushed herself to her feet and brushed sand off of her. Speaking of food, she was rather hungry herself. Might as well do what the child was going to do!
