Characters: Qorri, E'ril
Description: E'ril helps Qorri deliver clean linens to the barracks cots.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 5 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Sh'del, Meledei
Walking inside the weyrling barracks, she came through with a pile of linens
in her hands. The girls had freshly laundered them and Qorri was sure it was
time for the weyrlings to have fresh sheets. Humming as she set them on each
cot, Qorri worked her way down the line.
Strolling through the Barracks, a piece of fruit in hand, E'ril performed
preliminary inspections of the weyrlings' living quarters while they were
out to lunch. As he passed by a doorway he spotted a familiar face. "And
good day to you, Headwoman. Need a hand? I've just about finished my snack
here."
"Aye if you like. I've left a cart at the end there with the rest of them."
She smiled at E'ril. "How's it going these days?"
Discarding the core of his fruit in a wastebasket, E'ril obediently went and
grabbed a pile of sheets from the cart and began placing them on an empty
bed. "Complete insanity as usual. The kids are going through some of the
most rigorous parts of their training. /Between/ and firestone and all that
good
stuff. Basically that translates to longer days and more wine for Sh'del and
myself. And how about for yourself, Qorri?"
"Getting ready for Meledei's hatching. And she wants it to be perfect, of
course." Qorri adored the junior rider so she didn't want to fail her and
had, in fact, been planning for this event a long while.
The bluerider nodded in agreement. It being her gold's first clutch and all
he hadn't expected anything else. "Well, I'm sure you'll pull it off.
Meledei is easier to please than some goldriders. Imagine if she were picky
or if
Elleth was a cranky gold."
"You know, I've never really met a cranky gold yet." She considered that,
though she knew they existed. "Meledei's still young, though, so sometimes
she tends to change her mind." Qorri smiled.
"I'm sure she does. I don't know much about organizing a hatching myself.
Well, except for getting the Candidates dressed and lined up of course. I'd
imagine there are many things to be decided upon." E'ril supposed the lack
of
knowledge on the subject was due to his manly nature and demanding job
title.
Preparing Candidates for their entrance onto the Sands was work enough for
him.
"Aye, though once you go through a few of them with a queenrider, you learn
their preferences and you don't have to ask anymore." Qorri liked that. It
made things easier. Smiling as she thought of the event to come, she
finished
with the new linens on her side of the barracks and stood back.
E'ril finished his side and joined the Headwoman. "Looks tidy enough. Sure
the kids will come make their beds and the picture will be complete. Come
take a
peek around bedtime though and it won't look like this anymore. Don't know
why
they insist on making more work for themselves. They know we inspect
barracks
come morning." He sighed and added, "There's just some things I'll never
understand,
no matter how many Turns I keep this job."
"I've seen a few candidates come through that were very neat. They're few
and far between but every now and again..." Qorri thought of the one who
almost
bordered on obsessive. Even she wasn't quite that bad.
"Oh don't I know it. Sometimes those weyrlings can prove to be the most hard
headed. So stuck in their ways it can be a real chore to teach them
something
new. The wisdom and attitude of a young dragon can really help in those
situations," he explained. Sometimes the innocence of a weyrling's lifemate
was the only thing that could change their rock hard minds.
"Well I don't know much about dragons so I'll leave you to that." She gave
one last
look of the barracks before turning to go, taking her cart with the dirty
linens with her.
"Good luck, E'ril. You'll need it."
E'ril waved to her as she carted past and out the door. "Thanks, Headwoman.
I'll be seeing you," he called after her. Then, folding his arms across his
chest, he admired the quietness and cleanliness of the empty barracks.
