Dolphineers Report

Writers: AL, Jelena
Date Posted: 25th March 2012

Characters: Irabel, Naton
Description: Irabel and Naton write a report on their findings.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 6

It was a quiet night in the Dining Hall as Naton walked in, carrying
some hides over one arm, clutching a small wineskin under his other and
writing utensils in his hands. As he found himself his favourite place,
he spread out his stuff before he walked off in search of some fresh
glasses and perhaps a small snack from the kitchen. Irabel would be
there soon and he had every intention on making their work time as
pleasant as possible.

"Hey Naton." Irabel had been doing her own work and brought her own
stack to add to Naton's own. She, however, did not spread out her
things, not wanting to impede on his space, but stacked them in a
corner of the table that wasn't fully occupied. "You seem to arrive
before I do. Which is odd considering I'm usually the early one."

"I'm just excited to get things going," Naton said with a big grin as he
returned to the table with two glasses and a few small meatrolls. "Would
you like some wine, or shall I go bother the staff for some fresh juice
or klah?" He could really appreciate a good drink, but he did
understand not everyone liked to drink on a regular basis.

"Wine is good with me." Irabel wasn't the sort to refuse a nice glass of
wine, especially in good company. She slid into a seat, settling her
legs and then looked over what she had brought. "Besides, it's rather
relaxing."

"Perfect!" Naton said, pouring her a good glass of wine before he sat
down himself. "Did you have a good day so far? I had the pleasure to
oversee a written test for the apprentices." The journeyman yawned
deliberately, showing just how exciting that had been.

"Oh yes. I was discussing search and rescue with some of the older
apprentices who are looking at that as a specialty for when they walk
the tables. I don't think all of them will choose it, but a couple
lookd pretty interested." Irabel knew it was an important job, but it
could also be very stressful.

"That's good news," Naton said with a pleased grin. "I thought there
might be, some of them have been asking a lot of questions lately. It's
good to hear." Naton always loved it when apprentices were interested
in his specialty. While he thoroughly enjoyed teaching the more general
classes as well, having a few more advanced classes to teach was even
better. "Of course, with role models like you and me, it's not that
difficult to imagine they all want to be in our specialty." He winked
cheerfully at her.

"I'm sure all the girls want to do your specialty." Irabel couldn't help
but laugh softly. "So, shall we go over what we have worked out on our
own?"

"And you reel in all the teenage lads, eh?" Naton returned the
compliment with a grin. "That sounds like a good plan. I drew out a
chart of the manoeuvre, you brought the current maps, right?"

"Hardly." Irabel snorted and waved her hand dismissively, then nodded as
she thumbed through her snack and pulled out several. "Here we go.
That's where we were." She tapped the area with a finger, then traced a
line. "So made our way in this direction and angle."

"Right," Naton said, his brow now furrowing in concentration as he
followed Irabel's trace on the map. "So it really was all about the
current, don't you think? It gave us the right angle and speed for our
approach."

"Possibly. Even dolphins swim faster when there is a current to bolster
them. However, what we need to find out is if that is a steady current,
or if it changes." Irabel traced the line of the current they had
followed. "If it doesn't change, then we could certainly use it. We'd
have to very careful though. It might be worth sending out some
dolphins to keep an eye on it, to monitor what it does."

"That is a good plan," Naton nodded. "I'll be sure to include it in my
patrol tomorrow and ask the 'phins if they can keep us updated." He
seemed thoughtful for a moment, chewing at the end of his pencil,
before he used its other end to point out another part of the map. "I
think this current here could have just about the same effect."

"It's very possible. We'll need to watch it for at least a Turn, see if
it's affected by the seasons and whether or not it changes - but it
could be worth it." And it wouldn't be much effort to have the dolphins
go and keep an eye on it. "We should double check with the Hallmaster,
make sure he's in line with this."

"You're right, as always," Naton grinned. "Why don't we write that
report that we were meaning to write now. I'll turn it in to him first
thing tomorrow. Unless you want to do the honours, milady?"

"That's fine. I'm easy." Irabel pulled out some blank parchment and
picked up a quill. "Get it written and submitted and see if he'll let
us do the survey. I have a feeling he will."
