"Gah, I can't be the last one there again!" Delria muttered to herself as
she ran through the halls. She was supposed to be meeting some of her
girlfriends for lunch and she had a habit of running late. Her friends had
thought it would be funny to place bets on when it would happen. The punishment
was the decision of the winner. She could only imagine what they would come up
with.
Lost in her worry, Delria swung around a corner a little too fast
which caused her to trip on her own feet. What's worse were the
crowded stairs she had come across. As she scrambled for the handrail,
unsuccessfully getting a grip on it, she called out to the bypassers,
"Sorry! Watch out!"
With little warning the shout made him turn but though he tried to
grab the girl his grip slipped and he ended up against the wall of the
corridor and she bounced.
Delria groaned after a moment before trying to sit up. She had taken
quite the tumble and she knew a handful of people had seen her do it.
Hopefully she hadn't hurt anyone else. She sat up and leaned against
the wall for a second to gather her thoughts before running for cover.
"Hey," he said pushing off the wall. "Are you alright?" He bent over
her and offered a hand to help her up from where she'd propped herself
against the wall. "Do you need a healer?"
It was just like in her dreams, well almost. All except for the pain.
He was tall and handsome and was being so sweet to her even after she
had undoubtedly given him a good bump on the head. Delria's eyes went
soft and assumed a far away gaze for a moment. She replayed his voice
in her head for
a moment before the actual words sunk in.
"No...um, I don't think so though," Delria replied, blushing as she
took his offered hand up. She brushed herself off and ran a hand
through her golden hair. "Thank you. I hope I didn't hurt you too
badly?"
"Oh no," he chuckled. "I was afraid for you. You slammed into me
pretty hard." He pointed his thumb over his shoulder. "Were you going
to eat?" He was still rather worried for the girl, she didn't seem
like she was all there yet.
The memory of why she had been in such a hurry came back to her. Her
friends could wager whatever they wanted now, she was going to take
her time now that she'd manage to meet a handsome stranger. "I was
actually. Would you care to join me for a bite? I was on my way to
meet up with a group of friends but if you wanted some company I'd be
more than happy to go with you."
K'ale quirked a corner of his mouth. "I wouldn't want to stand between
you and your friends but I wouldn't mind the company." She was a
rather pretty girl and that would be nice on the other side of the
table rather than sitting by himself again.
Delria smiled at him with her whole body and resisted the urge to take
his hand. "I would love to be your company. Shall we then?" She let
him lead them to the dining room and only took her eyes of him once
they got to the serving line. When it came time to choose a seat she
scanned the room for her friends. Finding them crowded around their
usual table, Delria chose a spot sweet from them but still at a
glancing distance so they might spot her with her handsome stranger.
That's when she realized she didn't know his name. How would she ever
find him again without that? "Hey, so I never got the name of my
victim. I'm Delria and my green is Camieth."
K'ale went through the line and then followed her to the table. He
smiled at her introduction. "I'm K'ale," he siad. "my brown is
Imalkyth. You just Impressed at the last hatching right?"
"Yep. That's me. Still relatively new to this whole dragonriding
thing. Enjoying myself so far. Are you from here?" She made
conversation while she ate slowly. She was starving to be sure but
didn't want to make herself look like an ovine.
He nodded and swallowed. "Yes, born and raised. My parents are both
dragonriders." He picked up a roll from his tray and tore off a piece.
"Where are you from," he asked before popping it into his mouth.
"I'm actually from a small Hold in Opal Cove territory. I've been here
for a couple Turns though. My friends say you can't even tell I was
Holdbred. I suppose that's a good thing. I like it here much better.
Home was so boring," Delria explained. As she ate she considered the
fact that sure supposed she should get used to calling Dragonsfall
home. It wasn't as if she'd ever live anywhere else and frankly that
didn't bother her one bit.
Sometimes he thought he might prefer boring but that wasn't really in
his makeup. That was why finally after turns of denial he'd Stood for
that last hatching. "There's nothing wrong with being Hold bred," he
smiled. "One of my best friends is Hold bred and one of the best
bakers you'll ever meet. We all missed her presence in the kitchens
when she Impressed."
"I'm sure you all did. No I much prefer it here though. I've met so
many great people," she said as she winked at him, flirting
shamelessly.
He smiled back at the pretty little rider. But he also knew better
than to mess too much with her while she was still a Junior Weyrling.
Her lifemate was still too young to understand and they couldn't take
the chance to upset her. "Yes," he said warmly. "There are some very
nice people here. Would you like a bubbly," he asked as he saw the
tray come out of the kitchen.
"Only always. Thanks," Delria replied. His answer had not been quite
what she'd hoped for but maybe he was just shy. Our maybe it was her
blasted knots again. If there was one thing she disliked about
weyrlinghood it was thre restrictions. No love in her life though she
supposed the love of her Camieth was enough to compensate. More than
enough in fact.
He retrieved a pair of them from the table and carried them back on a
small plate. They were still hot from the oven. He pushed them toward
her for her to select the one she wanted first.
Taking one from the plate Delria said, "Thank you. Maybe we can do this
again sometime? Just without me running you over." She smiled bashfully
and hoped he said yes.
"Sure," he chuckled.
