A bit of cheering up

Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 12 of Turn 6

It was just too much! Weaving between those walking in the tunnels,
Daret quickly made his way back to the barracks, or at least he went
in that direction. The thought of being amongst the other candidates,
especially the two who bullied him the most, set his nerves on edge.
In the end, he sat in a small crevice of the wall, his knees pulled up
so his forehead rested on them, his arms wrapped tightly around his
legs.

Thoughts of the meeting with N'ki and G'wen ran round and round in his
mind. How could he? What was so wrong with him that he was treated
this way? Daret had never felt so strongly about someone as he did
about N'ki but nothing would ever come of it. And because of it, he
was feeling incredibly worthless. Perhaps he should return to his
father ... return to the weaver craft. Being a rider wasn't worth the
heartache.

Jykri smiled when he came around the corner and saw Daret, but when he
saw his friend's face the smile became a frown of concern. "Hey, is
something wrong?"

Quickly wiping his eyes, Daret tried to smile and act as if everything
was perfect. "I ... I'm ... fine," he said as he moved to stand up.

"You don't _look_ fine."

Daret's lower lip quivered and he was quick to look down. Once he'd
calmed enough to talk, he whispered, "That's cause I don't feel fine."
Looking back up at him with tears threatening to fall once again, he
asked, "Have you ever wanted something so much then realized you'll
never ... ever ... have it?" Him ... was more like it.

Jykri hesitated a moment, then nodded. "Before I came here."

"What did you do about it?" the blonde asked with a hiccup and dabbed
at his nose with the hem of his tunic, exposing a fair amount of
stomach.

"I moved to the Weyr." Jykri shrugged.

The simple answer was all the answer he needed. Daret sighed and
wiped the tears from his cheeks before he stood. "Let's get out of
here. Where were you heading?"

"Back to the barracks to do some reading, but ... we could do
something else." He wasn't sure what his fellow Candidate would be up
for.

"Mind if we just walk for a while? I don't really want to be around
too many people right now," he said with glassy eyes as he looked up
at Jykri. "If you don't want to, I understand."

Jykri smiled. "I don't mind." He squeezed Daret's shoulder.

Daret smiled back and reached up to clasp the hand that was on his
shoulder. He held it gently in case the boy didn't want to make their
connection so public as they started walking. "So tell me how you've
been. Things going well?" he asked, barely aware of anyone walking by
since he kept his gaze on where he was putting his feet.

"Yeah. I'm settling in, meeting lots of people. Learning a lot too."
His stomach fluttered as Daret held his hand. It made him nervous to
hold hands with a boy in public, but it was also thrilling. Jykri had
to keep telling himself it was okay here.

"Learning alot, hm?" he asked with a knowing grin and wondered if
Jykri had been kissing anyone else. "So who have you met recently?
Perhaps I know them."

"I've met P'nal, he's a Wingsecond. And the Weyrdragonhealer, W'ser.
He helped me get some information on dragon anatomy." Jykri had met a
lot of people, and he tried to think back over the last few sevendays.
"Oh, and G'wen's friend, S'vin." His cheeks turned pink.

"All nice people ... except for W'ser, I haven't met him yet so can't
give a comment," Daret said with a small grin. It disappeared,
however, when Jykri spoke of S'vin and his hand involuntarily
tightened a bit. "S'vin ... tell me you didn't go all the way with
him?" he asked, seeing the blush on his fellow candidate's cheeks.

"Uh ... well not _all_ the way. He ..." Jykri leaned over and
whispered in Daret's ear. His cheeks burned hotter.

A slow smile grew on Daret's face as Jykri spoke of what was done to
him. Squeezing the boy's hand, he asked, "And did you like it?",
knowing that he would. It was an incredible feeling.

Jykri nodded. "Could I ... try it with you sometime? I don't think I'd
be very good, but ... you could teach me." He could hardly believe he
was saying such things.

The jolt of pure lust shot through him at the thought of teaching him.
His heart hammered rapidly in his chest and his breathing increased
as he leaned against the young man. "I would be happy to teach you,"
he whispered and kissed Jykri's neck. "Thank you ... for cheering me
up."

Jykri had to swallow twice before he could talk. "Any time."

"So ... did you want to try now?" Daret asked, looking up with yearning.

"Yes." He squeezed his hand and went looking for a private spot.
