He had waited a few sevendays and had not approached any cothold. He had waited until the guards were a little lax, a little less likely to be observant. And he had watched. His ribs were only a little sore, but there was still anger burning deeply in his chest. They had said he had attacked, when in truth, he had done no harm; he could not let that be. His own youthful anger had taken hold of his better senses. Perhaps his father would have recommended caution, to let it be. Well, he would be cautious. Perhaps the cotholders would never know what truly happened. But he would and for him, that would be more than enough.
As he watched from the shadows, he waited and watched from the boundaries of the cothold. The posted guards were not professional; they were too worried about protection from the cold of winter. Perfect. Jenackt's eyes turned to the cothold and watched for any movement from the windows. There was no movement, no sound of occupation. They were all asleep, falsely feeling safe with their guards. His lips curled in satisfaction. Far better for him.
Creeping with every bit of stealth he possessed, Jenackt slipped past the guards and went for the barn. On quiet feet, he silently opened a door just enough to allow himself inside and then closed it just as quietly. Letting his eyes adjust to the dim light, he scanned his surroundings from a crouch. No one. It was quiet. His eyes moved to the piles of hay and grain that lay in storage, then promptly narrowed, searching more. In only a moment, he found what he had truly been looking for. An unlit lamp. In a crouching crawl, he made his way to retrieve it. Picking it up, he heard a rustle and went completely still, ears straining to pick out the sound. Long moments passed before he knew it had just been the rustle of wind outside. He exhaled the breath he had been holding and crawled towards the piles of hay and grain.
He tested it with his fingers; it was good and dry. Smiling to himself, he lay the lamp onto the hay. He was an old hand at starting a campfire with rudimentary tools, so the swathes of hay were far too easy to light. In only a moment, the hay had caught and was slowly smoldering. Jenackt grinned with malicious pleasure, then grinned wider as he made his way out of the barn before the smoke could be detected. He glanced around, eyes sharp before scurrying towards the dim boundaries of the cothold.
In the dark shade of the trees, Jenackt watched with bated breath, then chuckled softly when smoke began pouring out of the barn windows and they lit with the brightly burning flames he had created. The fallen lamp would take the blame. No doubt someone would be blamed for foolishly leaving a lit lamp in the barn. That was no concern of his. He watched as the guards sounded an alarm, but it would be too late. Now the family that had accused him of attacking an innocent would have the hardship they had inflicted on him. Justice, as far as he was concerned, was served. He stayed until he knew the barn was fully engulfed, then quietly walked away, content.
