N'vanik tapped a finger on the council room table. He couldn't stop
thinking of what he'd overheard and the worry that Qorri had planted
in his head. "Are you just playing nice?"

Internally she sighed. Things had been going so well recently but his
body language told her something was wrong. So she opted for a little
wide eyed surprise. "What do you mean?"

"If you're confirmed as Weyrwoman, what are your intentions?" Of
course, she could just lie. How could he trust anything she said?

Her eyes narrowed. She'd gone out of her way to work with him and he
still had that sharding chip on his shoulder? "_If_ I'm confirmed as
Weyrwoman as you say, I intend to lead this Weyr with _whomever_
Panitath selects as Weyrleader." She left not doubt in her statement
that she hoped it wouldn't be N'vanik. This had gone beyond his
supposed broken heart with one Weyrwoman and disappointment with
another. This was getting personal and she was tired of taking the
blame for things others had done in her place.

That answer didn't say anything, except that she was angry at him.
"And what if you end up with me?"

She bit back her first response and replied, "Then we'll have to find
a way to work together won't we?" **hopefully without you constantly
thinking we're going to pack up and fly away.**

"_Would_ you work with me? Or do you have your own plans?" The
conversation he'd overheard seemed to imply things would be different
once Cyrdis was confirmed.

"I plan on working with _whoever_ becomes Weyrleader." Her eyes
narrowed. "If that means you, then I will work with you, as I have
been trying to do." She paused for a moment, then gestured between the
two of them. "I didn't start this you know."

"Never said you did. But I learned the hard way not to trust people."
Particularly goldriders who were supposed to be his Weyrwoman. One had
simply walked out, the other had shut him out until she cracked her
shell.

"As have I, but I don't start a relationship by accusing them of
intentions to quit on me." She had thought they were working past this
whole issue of his, but no. Here it was right back to square one. She
was getting very tired of this hidebound attitude toward her . "What
do you want me to say that I haven't already?"

"I don't know." Anything she said might be a lie, or it might not. He
had no way of knowing.

She rolled her eyes. This was exactly what she'd come to expect from
the man. Unreasoning reactions from his gut with no basis in reality.
At least she had the comfort of K'deren. He saw her for who she was,
not some scapegoat for the behavior of others.

"Is there something going on that's calling my motives into question again?"

N'vanik wasn't about to admit it was based on overheard gossip. "I'm
always wondering. You seem like a nice, stable person, but sometimes
things change when a person gets power."

She snorted at that. "I'm a goldrider. I've had power, as you put it,
for turns. I've _been_ Acting Weyrwoman before." Ok that sounded a
little lame even in her own ears. But she wasn't going into her
history and the fact that she'd felt robbed when she'd worked so very
hard for her Wyer only to be supplanted by a matter of timing. Well,
this time was different. This time she _was_ going to be confirmed as
Weyrwoman by the first egg. She didn't know if she should be offended
by the 'seem like' or not. "I _am_ a nice stable person for the most
part."

**Ok, calm down Cyradis** she told herself. There was no reason to get
the whole Weyr in a knot again and how did he get under her skin so
easily anyway. }:Shall I come:{ **No need love, I can handle
Loseth's** she sent and then hoped she really could handle the
sharding hard headed Weyrleader.

"Yeah, we'll see." If she turned out to be terrible, well ... the last
two Weyrwomen hadn't lasted that long. He could just wait her out.

The smug sound of those three word just inflamed her anger again. "I
guess we will won't we," **and you'll have to deal with the
consequences, won't you.** Their relationship was difficult from the
beginning but the frustrating thing was it didn't have to be that way.
If only N'vanik would drop his nasty attitude.

She stood and placed her hands on the table. "Anything else? Or are we
going to continue to beat this runner to death?"

"Nope, we're done." Talking with her was an unpleasant necessity, and
N'vanik wanted to do it as little as possible.
