Firon sat with the covers up around his neck, wondering just how long his wife's meeting with Cyrek would last. He had really wanted to go, but considering the fact that he had almost swooned climbing the stairs, he figured it would not be a good idea to attent. Still, he wished his Ailyn was there now. She would know how to make him feel better. She always made him feel better.
Suddenly her voice called in from the other room, "Firon? Fen came again.
Jeyar wrote me saying you weren't feeling well..." She trailed off once she reached the doorway to their bedroom, and her eyes filled with concern. "Oh, love..."
"I think I have a fever," he mutter as his felt his head again.
Ailyn came over to stand at his head, gently resting her hand on his brow, her fingers cool against his heated flesh. "I think you do too. Does your throat hurt?"
"A little bit," he admitted piteously. Her fingers felt so cool on his forehead. "I'm sorry I missed the meeting."
"It's better if you miss it, Firon. You don't want to give Cyrek this cold, do you?" She smoothed his hair back. "Let me get something for you for that throat of yours..."
"How was it?" he asked in a hoarse voice that was only minorly exaggerated as a plea for pity.
"My brief meeting with Cyrek? It went smoothly," she told him before making her way into the kitchen. After quickly boiling a pot of water, she poured some into a mug and added a couple medicinal herbs and a dash of something else for better taste. "Here you are, love... Can you sit up?"
Firon slid the blankets down, surprised at how much energy that seemed to have drained from his body. With a groan he sat himself up. "So what did Cyrek have to say?"
"He says that he wants you to pick the date of the meeting next time." Gently she cradled his head with her hand while she helped him steady the mug with the other.
"I felt really bad to have to reschedule." He sipped at the drink carefully, knowing just how hot it would be.
"It's all right, Firon... Sometimes these things can't be helped."
He sighed as he sat back agains his pillow. "I hate feeling so... weak."
"I know." Ailyn moved to perch gently on the edge of the bed. "But soon you'll be well again and no doubt prove to me just how strong you really are." An impish grin crossed her lips before giving him a small kiss on his temple.
Firon knew he was sick if he couldn't even gather the energy to respond to her kiss. "Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?"
Carefully she set the mug down on the nightstand and helped him lay back against the mattress. "Of course," she murmured as she tucked the covers snugly around him.
He smiled up at her as he snuggled back into the pillows. "So... tell me why you're willing to put up with a baby like me?"
She smiled gently down at him. "Because I love you."
"Tell me a bedtime story," he said with a tired grin. "Tell me why you love me."
Ailyn eased down on the bed, one hand moving to soothingly stroke his hair. "I love you because of the way you murmur in your sleep, and when I shift in bed, you hold on tighter to my arm. I love you because you snore, even though you deny it." She grinned down at him. "I love you because when you're being teased, you get a crinkle in your forehead.
Right here." She traced that small, creased line of his brow. Then her voice grew softer. "I love you because you have a good heart, and are always thinking of others. And I love you because we chose each other, because we're making a life together." She caressed his cheek. "How's that for your bedtime story, hmm?"
"I love that story," he said with a slight smile. "If I were not afraid I'd get you sick I'd kiss you and show you just how much I loved that story. And the story teller, of course."
"Of course," she grinned. "When you're feeling better, you'll have to remember to show me, Firon."
He would have had a witty and flirtateous response to that, had he not already given in to the urge and fallen into much needed sleep.
