Description: G'wen shows Daret the queen's eggs
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 5 of Turn 6

G'wen watched the red star rise as darkness deepened. According to
Neath and his dad's flit, the queen dragon was now asleep. So if he
was going to spring a nice surprise on Daret, now was as good a time
as he could wish for. The boy seemed a bit down and he was hoping
this would cheer him up.

He saw the short figure with blond hair that could only be the
candidate emerging from the classrooms and jogged up beside him.
"Daret! Just the person I wanted to see. I was told to have you come
with me."

"By who?" Daret asked, unsure whether it would be a good thing to
follow his friend or not. After the disaster with N'ki, he was
inclined to head right to the barracks and stay there.

G'wen tapped the side of his nose and gave Daret a cheeky grin.
"Can't say, just follow me." Tucking his hand into the crock of
Daret's arm, he guided him towards the Inner Lake.

Sighing softly, he allowed G'wen to lead him to wherever the boy
wanted. He'd been so in the dumps lately, he wouldn't be surprised if
G'wen wanted to push him into the lake. Perhaps he'd just stay under
the water ... "How've you been feeling? Are you finally going to take
things easy?"

G'wen just rolled his eyes at that. "Well, the Flight wasn't great,
but it wasn't the end of the world either." It just hadn't been Sh'lua
again. The dark boy sighed at that thought and mentally kicked
himself. He had E'naer, he had no right to want the muscular blue
rider as well. "You might know how that goes...if you want.". He gave
the other boy a sideways glance.

Daret blinked at the comment then looked at him with a frown. "What
do you mean? Do you actually get any say in who she chooses?"

"Of course you have a say! Or at least Neath let me have a say. But
that's not really what I meant or wanted to talk about.". He squeezed
Daret's arm as they walked through the bathing pools and kept going,
right past more than a few attractive blue riders stripped down to
clean their life mates. " Have you thought about what you really
want? Is it going to be that?" and he nodded towards the blueriders.
"Or are you going to try for one of those?". And he pointed to a
delicate little green weyrling.

Hearing the topic changing, Daret frowned and looked between the blue,
the green and G'wen. "Is this a trick question? Green, of course,"
he answered, not sure where this was going. Could he bring up his
concerns with G'wen?

"Then are you going to try this time? Like, really try and not just
stand out there on the Sands like it's no big deal." G'wen looked
straight into Daret's blue eyes.

There was no hesitation or evading of those eyes. "Yes, I am. I
really want to Impress this time," he answered with all the sincerity
he could convey. His eyes lit up with a confidence that this would be
the last time he Stood.

"Good." Steering Daret into a dark corridor until the light of the
glows behind them faded into darkness, he added, "I heard about what
happened with N'ki the other day." He sgueezed the boy's arm in
sympathy.

The incident with N'ki happened so long ago that Daret simply frowned
at G'wen for a moment, not that the greenrider could see. Only the
hitch in his exhale revealed the pain that N'ki caused. "Yea, well,
it's my own fault for being so stupid," he said softly as his steps
slowed a bit because of the darkness. "G'wen ... where are we going?"

"Shh...take this." G'wen handed Daret an old glow and kept walking
though the dark tunnel until there was a slit of light ahead.
Motioning one more time for Daret to keep his mouth shut, G'wen
tip-toed up to the narrow crack in the wall and motioned for Daret to
look over his shoulder.

"What do you think?' he whispered.

It wasn't difficult looking over G'wen's shoulder, the boy was a tad
shorter than him but he was quick to grip G'wen's shoulder when he got
a good look. The eggs! "By Faranth's First Egg," he whispered as he
looked over the various eggs. Daret was in awe and he couldn't focus
on any one of them. He was working hard to keep breathing, he was so
excited and knowing that one of them would be his soon ... this was
the best end to a trying few weeks he could have asked for. Reaching
around to give his friend a hug, he said, "They're beautiful!"

"Aren't they?" G'wen figured that showing Daret the eggs might make
the boy long for a green more than he longed for yet another
bluerider. He stepped aside to let the boy have a full look.
Pointing to a pretty little egg off to one side he said, "T'bel's
little flit had a look at the eggs the other day and told Fanth about
them. They both figure that little one may be green."

Blinking rapidly, Daret couldn't keep his eyes off the egg that G'wen
pointed out. "Really? Has the flit been right before?" he asked, the
sudden stab of longing catching him by surprise. "I really hope so
... and I really, really, hope she chooses me."

"She will." G'wen wrapped an arm around Daret's shoulders. "She will."
