"Ah, Sarban. I have a pile of signed records for you," Corowal lifted his
gaze from his work when he
heard him enter and greeted him with a wave towards the pile on the corner
of his desk.
"Ah well that's just lovely," he said with a rueful grin. "Does it come
with a retirement?" The look
on his face said he was thinking about heading for the Hills for a few days.
"Sorry, no. And you can't just slip one for me to sign because I always
read everything, including the
fine print," Corowal grinned.
"Riiighhhtt..." Giving an exaggerated sigh, he sat down and gathered up the
pile, smoothing it out
without thinking. "I think it's time to ride up to High Hills and have a
look around with the fellow who
might be interested in taking it on. See what he thinks." Besides that,
Sarban wanted to make sure there
were no holdless taking advantage of the place's vacancy.
"You go, I'm going to the Hatching at Dolphin Cove Weyr. Take some guards
with you," Corowal replied.
"Oh, and I have good news about Green Valley Hold. I've confirmed Reven as
the new holder."
"Ah well that's settled then. Any idea when he might take one of these
young, unmarried women off of
our hands?" It was becoming a serious problem and Sarban could hardly walk
without hearing giggles
around corridors.
"I hope so. I did suggest him a starting a family," Corowal replied. "With
Felyna not having easy with her
pregnancy, nobody is really supervising them."
"Do we not have anyone else?" That was a stupid question since they really
didn't. Corowal's other Blood
relations weren't around really and they didn't have any other women with
the knowledge. "Ah well." Sarban
ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident.
"A few elderly aunties but I don't think they have the energy for young
women," Corowal replied. He was
thinking the one who was teaching Erilite, but her health wasn't the best.
"Corowal, we need more women. Not young girls-but women. We had some,
didn't we? Where on Pern
did they go?" Sarban's own single plight was beginning to get slightly to
him and he couldn't help but think
some of their male holders might be feeling the same.
"My cousin did his best to drive them off," Corowal replied. "Good thing I
took over from him when I did."
"Indeed. Emerald Falls would have shut down without offspring." Sarban
tapped the desk. "Maybe we need
to put out some sort of notice to the other Holds that we need some fine
women to make their way here.
Perhaps to serve as fostermothers. We need to find the ones that he drove
off."
"We can try that. The coming Turn Over will also help to advertise us. Have
you started to plan for it with the
Headwoman?" Corowal said and asked.
"Aye, too bad Felyna doesn't have time to do the female things with that.
I'm shells at decorating."
He threw up his hands. Sarban was glad about the pregnancy, though. It was
a good thing for everyone.
Scratching his chin, he looked back. "With so many people here, though...it
might attract a certain...
criminal." He had an idea.
"I want to attract everyone to come here..Although you and Zandan probably
have to talk about the
security," Corowal said.
"I'm talking about the boy. The boy we want to find." Indeed-no one could
resist Turnover. Especially
when it was cold as not outside of the Hold and there would be plenty of
food on offer.
"That's why I want you to talk with Zandan, spring him a trap or
somethings. But he won't be only one. Big
gather always attracts ruffians. Thiefs, brawlers, and people who can't
handle their drink," Corowal replied.
"Oh I know. We may be able to work out something like what we did for your
birthingday gather. Not
quite so many people as that but...we'll be covered." A meeting with Zandan
was on his list anyway.
"We could have a small race during the Turnover festivities. I always enjoy
those. I'm sure Aivorn can
arrange it, especially we keep it local."
"Aye, probably time to have a decent one anyway, provided the weather
holds." They didn't have
an indoor track so that was a consideration.
"Well, weather is something we can't do anything about," Corowal said with
a shrug.
"Aye I know. We can still do the gather bit with the tents, but a race
would be out of the question
if things turn sour. Can't risk hurting the beasts." Even Sarban knew that.
Checking that off his list,
the steward began to consider other business. "Hmmm....nothing else on my
list.."
"Yes, but it will be early summer, so the weather should be favorable,"
Corowal said. "We can always
prepare for all kind of weather," he continued.
Preparation was Sarban's lifeblood. A seacrafter knew that things could
change in a moment and
he always liked to be ready. If the rains started-there would be no way
they could keep the track
from becoming muddy and treacherous despite their best efforts.
"Anyways, events can be cancelled if conditions are against them," Corowal
finished his train of thought.
