Description: Daret thinks about the past few months
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Jykri, G'wen
It had been three months since the hatching that Daret was so convinced
he'd be Impressing from. The dragon in that little egg wasn't meant for
him. And all he'd learned since his conversation with G'wen was to just let
it all go, even though the greenrider said no such thing. He knew his
friend meant well, wanted him to settle down and be serious for once in his
life. But being serious made him think too much and he was tired of being
desperate. If he was meant to Impress, he would and if he wasn't, well,
he'd figure it out later. He was done stressing over it.
And when he wasn't stressing … he was being his normal, flirty self. Daret
crawled into bed, late as usual, and sighed deeply. It was only at night,
when he was alone, did he consider how messed up his life was.
His father was unhappy. Braret was a stoic man who worked hard and knowing
his son was pushing boundaries at the Weyr was disconcerting him. The man
didn't begrudge Daret his encounters but the stories being told in the
Weaver Hall was a bit too much for him to take.
Daret had been called down during his last rest day to an incredibly
uncomfortable discussion with his father and the new woman he's currently
courting. Etine was even more traditional than Braret and the pursed lips,
disbelieving glares and outright snorts were more than the boy could take.
They fought. Daret was still amazed that his father was putting his foot
down, even denying attending the next Hatching until the boy settled down.
Watching with wide eyes as the pair left him alone in the sitting room
with the threat of complete abandonment, Daret sighed, shook his head then
left with those awful words hanging between them.
Turning on his cot, he buried his head under his pillow. Daret smothered a
sob and forced his racing thoughts to calm but it was impossible. There
was no use dwelling on the bad … the fight, the lack of Impression, the
uncertainty of life if he didn't Impress ...
All he could do was lose himself in the moment and to make each moment
count.
With that thought, he threw the pillow aside and went to look for Jykri.
The boy always knew how to cheer him up.
