Perhaps Not Such A Dream

Writers: Danielle, Eimi
Date Posted: 17th January 2006

Characters: Daigoro, Catriana
Description: Daigoro decides to give Catriana one of the firelizard eggs Fieayz is sending to the Hall
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 9, day 27 of Turn 3

It was still early in the evening, just after dinner was finished and the kitchen cleaned. Catriana had a little free time, which she usually tried to spend with her brother, Darrin. But Darrin was hard at work with his peers on a project, and unfortunately, she couldn't help him this time. If it were Darrin's project alone, well...things might have been different.

So when the cook asked for volunteers to take trays of tea around for those working late, she stepped forward, and shortly found herself laden with a tea service and a plate of desserts for the Hallsecond. A task she minded not at all, since Daigoro was slowly becoming something of a friend.

The Hallsecond smiled when noticed the plate full of cookies coming his way. "Ah, Cinale knows me too well."

"Good evening, sir." Catriana curtsied with the laden tray- something she'd started to become good at. "Where would you like this?"

"Well, I'll take the plate with me," he said with a boyish grin, reaching for the small mound of cookies, "and the tea," his other paw closed around the dainty cup, "... oh, that's warm... and the rest can go at the end of the table there."

"Yes, sir." She set the tray down where he had indicated, and artfully arranged what was left upon it before turning back to the Hallsecond.

"How are things down in the kitchens?" Daigoro asked, tiny cookie crumbs lining his mouth.

"Oh, just fine. A little quiet though."

"And how are you doing? Not homesick at all?"

"Sometimes I am. I can't help but to think what they'd be doing at the vinyards at home- wondering what sorts of wines father would be working on, and if any of the grapes would have been reserved for his special ice-wines." She shrugged, and smiled sadly. "But I'm here, and glad of it still."

"It's only natural to wonder about your family. Have you contacted them since you came to the Hall?"

"Darrin, my brother, sent a letter a little while back, and I attached a note to the end of that. But 'tis so hard to find a caravan that travels that way at this time of year. Spring will be easier, what with trade starting up again."

"Well, I have a flit, you know. Wort." The little bronze chirped from his perch high on a shelf at the sound of his name. He fluttered down to the table and began preening himself, knowing they were talking about him.

"Oh! He's lovely." Cat leaned in to get a better look at him. "Hi there, Wort." She glanced back up at Daigoro. "I met Cinale's little green. Such amazing little creatures. No one has one back home."

"Yes, they are incredible. Smart and handsome, aren't you boy?" The bronze cocked his head and chirped in agreement. "Have you thought of getting one yourself?"

"Oh...no...that would be naught but a daydream. Like wishing to be a dragonrider." They'd had that conversation before. Some things remained dreams, and ought not be indulged with too much thought. Or so she'd been told, time and time again.

Daigoro's eyes settled on a letter on his desk sent to him by Fieayz and her little gold, Arva. "Hmmm... Perhaps not such a dream."

"Sir?"

"You never met the Hallmaster's daughter, Fieayz, I believe. She's now fostered out at the Smith Hall near Garnet Valley Hold." Daigoro set the letter down and smiled as he looked at the young kitchen girl. "She has a gold flit whose Eggs need a good home. She's asked me to find her suitable owners here at the Vintner Hall. How would you like to be one of them?"

Her eyes widened at his words. "Oh...Sir...can you mean that?" she breathed.

"Yes," he smiled. "I need to find them good homes. I have already decided to give one Egg to journeyman Hasev before he leaves the Hall.
But I didn't know who to give the second egg to. You'd be doing me a favor giving the creature a loving home."

"I'd...I'd be honored!" Her eyes lit up with excitement. "I don't know anything about caring for one, though."

"Trust me. They tell you what they need," Daigoro smiled. "I know you'd be a good lifemate to a flit."

"I don't know how I could ever repay you, or Fieayz." Catriana leaned against the table slightly, overwhelmed.

"You don't need to, Cat. As I said, you are doing me a favor. And hopefully you will be able to put the little critter to good use."

"I will certainly try to."
