N'vanik glared at the wingrider across the desk. "How well do you know
Weyrwoman Rhosyn?"

Sitting across the desk from N'vanik, Z'an had restrain the impulse
to tell N'vanik exactly what he didn't want to hear. The man not
only was his Wingleader, but his Weyrleader and could quite
likely make his life at the Weyr absolutely miserable. But he
was still offended by what the man had thought he had done
with Rhosyn. His eyes didn't hold any of his normal humor;
they were flat and his voice was civil but cool. "I consider her
a friend, Weyrleader. She's a pleasant companion and I happen
to like her."

"And she would consider you a friend?"

"I would like to think so, yes." Z'an's lips thinned. "Excuse me,
Weyrleader, but if I can ask....how is my relationship with Rhosyn any
of your business? You already insinuated that
I acted inappropriately."

"I don't know you well, and the situation I found you in ... made me
wonder." Not that he seriously believed it, but he couldn't help the
thought crossing his mind with Rhosyn passed out, dirty and with a
torn dress. "And then you had to argue instead of just giving her to
me. I was _this_ close to pulling rank, and I _hate_ pulling rank
unless I have to."

"Well, I didn't know your relationship with her either." Z'an frowned.
"Weyrleader or not. I was just trying to get her into a weyr
before more people saw her like that."

"Shards, you must not listen to Weyr gossip _at all_." How could Z'an
have missed that he and Rhosyn were lovers? They were hardly secretive
about it. "I took her to the Gather, she was my responsibility. Not
yours. If anything like that happens again you let _me_ take care of
the situation." N'vanik wondered if Rhosyn would find it amusing or
annoying to hear him acting so possessive.

"Considering the gossip I've heard about me, I usually look at Weyr
gossip as just that...gossip. Unless I see it with my own eyes, I don't
take it seriously. Besides, she never spoke about you when
we were spending time together and you do have a weyrmate."
Z'an sighed. "Look, I'm not trying to intrude on whatever relationship
you two might have, but if I see a friend in trouble, I'm going to help
and not ask whose responsibility it is first. I didn't know she came with
you. " He looked at N'vanik for a long moment. "And Weyrleader or
Wingleader, either one, you can't fault me for helping a friend."

He bristled at the idea of her spending time with Z'an. Which was
silly. Both he and Rhosyn had other partners and he never expected it
to be otherwise. "I don't fault your intent, but when I tell you to do
something, you do it."

Z'an stiffened and then gave a sharp nod. "Yes, Weyrleader."

"Just as long as you understand that."

"Even with my own personal relationships?"

N'vanik knew he was being a jerk for saying it. "When it interferes
with mine, yes."

Z'an took a deep breath and slowly rose."Then I respectfully request a
transfer, Weyrleader. "

He was angry enough to tell him good riddance, but there were
practical things to consider. "I need all my wingriders. But if you
can find someone to replace you, I'll grant it."

"Not from the Weyr, Weyrleader." Z'an's voice was soft, not
showing any anger. In truth, Z'an very rarely was angry. But
his brown eyes showed a disappointment that couldn't be
hidden. "I'm well aware of the need for
experienced wingriders. I was speaking of D'hol's wing.
It may be for the best that we not work closely together."

"Fine. I'll talk to D'hol and see what he thinks." The Wingleader
probably wouldn't be adverse to gaining an experienced brownrider.

Z'an nodded sharply. "May I be excused?"

"Yes." N'vanik would be happy to have Z'an out of his sight
