K'mai

K'mai

Sefanya was lost in thought as she made her way from the dining hall,
barely acknowledging friends and parents as they called greetings and
good morrows in passing. The Weyr had just finished the evening meal,
where she had spent an entire candlemarks debating the best
type of cloth for swaddling youngsters and the ideal age to teach
toddlers how to use a latrine. Of course, Sefanya loved children--
that's why she had five of her own, not to mention several fosters at
any given time. However, there were times when she yearned for some
adult company. Even if it were only for an evening.

She sighed, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. That one
always seemed to be escaping her braid. Ducking her head and
quickening her step, she began to go over the chores she would have to
get done tomorrow: clothes to take for washing, sweeping, finally
sewing the head back on Radela's little stuffed dragon...

"Ooooow," she exclaimed, her progress forward suddenly checked and her
head spinning from the impact. Stepping back, she took in the form of
the man before her. "Oh, dear. My apologies, K'mai."

"No worries. I wasn't watching where I was going, either. Are you
okay?" the bluerider asked.

Sefanya made a show of checking herself for injuries. All her Turns'
experience with cheering up children had given her a flare for the
dramatic. "Nothing broken, I don't think. How about you?"

She regarded the dragonrider a moment, her thoughts returning to her
earlier ruminations. He was taller than she; in fact, he had a good
head of height on her. He needs a haircut, she laughed to herself.
Suddenly self-conscious, she patted her own head, trying to smooth
down the flyaways that had appeared during the collision.

"I'm fine. Did you bump your head?" he asked as he watched her pat it.

Sefanya blushed at his question. "No, no. I'm fine." She smiled
sheepishly. Faranth, when did she turn into an adolescent? She
tried to regain her composure. She teased lightly, "So what are you
doing in this part of the Weyr, dragonrider? Other than running into
poor unsuspecting foster mothers?"

"I was visiting a friend, and now I'm on my way back to my weyr." He
smiled. "How are the kids doing?"

She returned his smile, and pride crept into her voice. "Oh, well
enough. They're growing fast, as children are wont to do. And how is
Sebeth?"

"Healthy and happy and flirting with all the greens," he said with a chuckle.

She laughed. "I see. And you? Are you flirting with all the
greenriders, K'mai?" She teased.

"And the blueriders. Brown and bronze, too, although they don't
appreciate the attention as much." He winked.

She burst into laughter at that. "Well matched, then. Although I'm
surprised you have to do much 'chasing' at all."

Sefanya noticed that the tunnel was all but deserted by now. Smiling
once more at the bluerider, she made to excuse herself. "It was good to see
you, K'mai."

"Good to see you, too. Where are you headed? Back to your room?"

"I suppose that's the safest place for me." She gave an exaggerated
wince as she touched her head again. "I don't often run into
dragonriders, you know."

He chuckled. "Would you like me to walk you back?"

She was surprised by his offer. "Thank you. That would be lovely." She
was loathe to give up his company, and the walk back gave her an
excuse to put it off a little bit longer.

K'mai offered his arm. "So, anything new in your life?"

Sefanya took it happily, then considered his question. "Well, my
oldest son Natur is seriously considering Candidacy for the first
time. My daughter Sialla has been getting into trouble with the harper
again. And my youngest is torturing my firelizard every time I turn
around." She made a face. "Children can be so... difficult."

"But wonderful, too. Right?" K'mai didn't have children of his own,
but he knew plenty of people that did.

"Yes, wonderful too." She chuckled. "When are you going to have a few
weyrbrats for me to raise?" They were approaching the door to her
apartment now. Sefanya sighed inwardly. The walk had been much too
short.

"Could be any time. You're certainly at the top of my list for foster
mothers whenever a happy little accident does arrive." He leaned
against the wall next to her door. "Well, here we are."

She hesitated. Was it a good idea? The children were all away for the
evening with friends, which is why Sefanya had the luxury of her long
conversation with K'mai to begin with. She closed her eyes as she
waged an internal war. It had been so long...

When she spoke it was barely a whisper. She opened the door. "Would
you like to come in?"

He studied her for a moment to be sure he read her right. "Yes, very
much." His smile wasn't his usual wide, flirty grin. It was gentle,
encouraging.

She returned the smile tentatively. She felt self-conscious, nervous,
apprehensive... and eager. Now that she had taken the first step, she
hoped the rest would follow easily.

Stepping into the cool interior of her quarters, Sefanya turned on a
single light. She made her way to the tiny kitchen area and waited for
K'mai to follow.

He stepped in, closing the door behind him. "No children tonight?"

"Not tonight." She started to make a pot of klah, but paused. She dug
through a cupboard, and finally found what she was looking for.
Holding it up, she tried to calm her pounding heart and make her voice
light. "Wine?"

"Yes, thank you." K'mai moved closer but left her some personal space.
"You don't have to be nervous, it's just me."

She nearly spilled the skin she was pouring. Placing a hand on the the
table, she glanced at K'mai's face. He looked so kind and encouraging.

"I'm sorry, I've just never... I mean, I haven't... I'm holdborn," she
stated lamely. "I haven't really spent any time with a man since my
husband died. At least, not like this." She blushed.

K'mai never quite understood the hold and hallbred views of sex. "But
you want to, right? There's nothing wrong with wanting to feel
pleasure."

She handed him a glass. Her voice was soft. "Yes. I want to." Taking a
rather large swallow of wine, she felt herself relaxing. K'mai was
being so kind and gentle; she was glad that he accepted her offer. She
smiled at him lazily. "Are you hungry?"

"Not for food." He sipped his wine.

She felt a jolt go through her at his words. Slowly, she placed her
now-empty glass on the table and moved towards him. She studied his
face as she approached. She didn't stop until they were nearly
touching. Then she raised a hand and laid it gently on his cheek, and
smiled.

K'mai leaned down slowly, giving her a chance to pull away, then he kissed her.

Sefanya lay on her side under her sleeping furs, fully aware of the
figure behind her. She could not tell if he was awake or not. Although
he hadn't moved in several minutes, his breathing had not yet slowed
to the steady, even pace most people exhibited while sleeping.

She tried to deal with her conflicting emotions about what had just
taken place. The experience had been unquestionably a pleasurable one;
her body still tingled in places, and she felt the delicious
exhaustion that she had almost forgotten during her long term of
self-enforced celibacy. At the same time, though, she worried about
her decision to invite a dragonrider to her bed. Despite Turns at the
Weyr, Sefanya still had not adopted the carefree attitude towards sex
that most of the weyrfolk shared.

Suddenly feeling an unrepresentable desire for conversation, she
rolled over to face her bedmate and placed a hand lightly on his
chest.

"Are you okay?" K'mai brushed a strand of hair from her face.

She smiled at his gentle touch. "Mmhhmmm. I'm well." She ran her
fingers lightly over his skin of his abdomen, fascinated by the feel.
So different from Artur's... yet just as nice, she decided. "I hope I
didn't disturb your plans this evening."

"Not at all. I'm always happy to spend time with a friend." His skin
tingled were she touched him.

The idea was not new to her-- friends, performing activities like the
ones the two of them had just finished. The Weyr encouraged such a
philosophy, and for good reason. She had just never allowed herself to
participate in it. That would have to change.

Rolling on top of K'mai, she lowered her mouth to his. The kiss was
languid and comfortable. She considered what K'mai had said: they were
giving and receiving pleasure, and what was wrong with that? Nothing.
Her hand trailed down beneath the bedfurs. She grinned as she felt him
adjust himself beneath her. "Do you have just a little more time? For
a friend?"

"Of course." He smiled before lifting his head for another kiss.
