Z'ku

Z'ku

When the brown firelizard appeared, he ran through his acquaintances, but
he couldn't remember anyone with a brown. The creature seemed a bit
confused, but allowed him to take the note.

Z'ku,

You were right.

I'm an idiot.

I'm sorry.

Meledei

He read it again, and again. A little spark of hope warmed his heart. Did
that mean she wanted him? That she was done with T'nom? Then Z'ku clamped
down on that silly emotion.

He paced the room, anger rising. Did she think he would come crawling back?
No, she'd made her choice, and now she had to live with it.

The firelizard watched him, creeling for a treat. Z'ku didn't have any meat
but he found some crackers that the little brown seemed to find acceptable.
Z'ku stared a the note and ran through different responses in his head.
Finally, he wrote:

Meledei,

We have to live with the choices we make. I do not accept your apology.

Z'ku

Was that what he really wanted to say? Was he throwing away a chance to be
with her? **No, dimglow. You never had a chance with her.**

He rolled the note and gave it to the brown, hoping it was well trained
enough to take it back to Meledei. Who did the firelizard belong to, anyway?

****

The note returned and Meledei took a deep breath then opened it. She
wanted to cry at the words written there. She hadn't expected Z'ku to want
a relationship, but she had hoped they could mend things enough to be
friends. Evidently, she'd been wrong.

Meledei crushed the parchment, then tossed it to the side. She was losing
friends left and right and she honestly didn't know what to do about it.
For the moment, all she could do was hide her face in her arms and weep.
