Z'ku paused at the door to his weyr and adjusted his tray. "Just to
warn you ... it's not exactly clean."
Pierka tilted her head and half smiled. "I'm ok with that as long and
I'm not gonna be sitting on your dirty underwear."
He snorted. "All my dirty underwear is safely in the sleeping room."
He pushed the door open and gestured for her to enter first. For the
last few sevendays, he'd had lots of women in his weyr, but this time
it wasn't for the purpose of sex.
She walked in with her dinner tray and slid it onto the table. She
only had to move a couple of old cups to the side to make enough room
for them both. Then she folded one leg under her as she sat. "This is
pretty nice," she said.
"My weyr or avoiding you-know-who?" He sat beside her.
"Both," she said. "It's just nice not to have to watch, you know?"
"Yes. It puts me off my appetite." Z'ku took a bite of his roast
wherry. "How is your appetite? With the baby, I mean."
"Well usually by evening I can eat pretty well. Vandor told me if I
eat the diet he gave me my appetite will come back. So I'm working on
it." She took a bite of her fish. The kitchens knew exactly how to
prepare fresh fish and with a bit of citron and sauce it was
wonderful.
"How far along are you?" He found himself curious about the process
and what it was like for her.
"Not very," she smiled. "The dolphins said it was very tiny. Mostly
it's the morning sickness and I'm sore," she added rubbing the center
of her chest briefly.
"Hmm." He took a bite and swallowed. "And you know for sure it's
T'nom's?" In a Hold, that would be a terribly insulting question, but
here it wasn't an unusual thing to ask.
"Yeah," she nodded. "There's been no one else other than flights."
Z'ku had been like that until recently. "It's nice to know for sure,
but too bad it's him."
"Yeah," she nodded. But it was more like too bad she cared so much
about him. She knew she could be happy with only T'nom in her life but
that wasn't really realistic. Her weyrling classes had taught her
that.
"Oh well," she smiled and shrugged. "Life goes on right? How about
you." she smiled a little knowingly. "Rumors have it you're making up
for lost time."
"I'm a bronzerider. It's about time I started acting like one. Women
_want_ me, and it's nice to be wanted." Meledei didn't want him, she
never had.
"There _is_ that," she grinned at him. "So why then are you having
dinner with me when there are all those easy targets out there so
eager to console you?"
He shrugged. "Because I want friends, too, and you understand how I
feel more than anyone else does."
"I'm glad you understand too," she smiled then she reached out to
squeeze his hand. "Don't think I could do this without someone in my
corner."
He squeezed her hand back. "Any time you need me, I'll be there."
"Thanks," shes said. "And I'll be here for you." Suddenly her world
looked a little rosier and she didn't quite feel so all alone. "So,
how's your dinner?"
"It's good. It seems to taste better in good company." He smiled,
humor in his expression. But it honestly did taste better when he
wasn't doing his best to ignore Meledei and T'nom in the dining
cavern.
She smiled back at him. "Yes it does." Then she decided that maybe a
little change of subject would be in order. "Do you like to swim?"
"Yes."
She grinned and tapped his hand. "Then next restday you're in for a
treat. We'll go swimming with dolphins."
"Xemroth will love it. And I'm sure you'll swim circles around me." It
was the first hint of real happiness he'd felt since the Flight.
"We'll have to ease into it. The dolphins will be very excited. They
love babies."
He grinned. "It sounds like fun all around. Should we leave early and
pack a lunch?"
"Yes," she smiled. "And dinner."
