"Dacraslar!" Tamajan increased his speed from a brisk walk to a fast jog, hoping to catch up with the man who had just turned a corner ahead of him.
"Dacraslar, wait up!"
It took the blue weyrling a moment to realize just what was so familiar about that name. The voice also sounded like someone he knew... It was enough to make him stop dead in his tracks. He turned around, and was amazed to find an old friend. "Tamajan!"
Tamajan beamed. "Some of the weyrlings told me that a seacrafter had Impressed in the last Hatching, but I wasn't sure if it was you or not!"
"That's right. I'm called D'cal now." Even so, the weyrling was amazed at how good it felt to be called by his old name again. "Have you been Searched, then?"
"Yes!" Tamajan's excitement was obvious, his grin threatening to split his face. "Did you really Impress your first time? Can I see your dragon? What's his name?"
"His name is Aosorath, and I would be so happy if you could meet him." D'cal felt a small pang of regret at agreeing so fast. Suddenly he realized, Tamajan might not know that he had impressed _blue_. Though he wouldn't trade his lifemate for all the bronzes on Pern, D'cal was nervous about friends from his old life knowing certain aspects of himself. They just might not understand. He wasn't even sure if _he_ did. Tamajan was oblivious to his friend's doubt. "Can we go now? I haven't gotten to see many dragons up close, except the one who brought me here."
}:I want to meet your friend too! :{ Aosorath chimed in happily.
"Sure," the weyrling replied, his voice just a little less certain. "He's right out there." Best to get it over with.
D'cal's fears were unfounded. Tamajan's first reaction to seeing Aosorath was open mouthed shock followed by, "He's _huge_ already! I thought you were still a weyrling!"
Aosorath spread his wings under the praise, making himself look even larger with the sun shining through his skyblue wingsails. }:He thinks I'm big!:{ He breathed an inperceptable sigh of relief and beamed under the praise of his friend. "Actually, he's one of the smallest of the blues. But he's also one of the fastest."
Tamajan breathed out in wonder as he took a step closer. "He's beautiful...
can I touch him?" "Of course you can." Aosorath obiediantly curled up his wings and took a step closer to the young man, rumbling gently his pleasure at meeting one of his lifemate's friends. "This is Tamajan, Aosorath. We've known each other since he we children."
Reaching up, Tamajan ran a careful hand down Aosorath's neck, looking thrilled at the chance. "Hello, Aosorath. I hope I'll find a dragon as nice as you are!" }:He will be a good rider,:{ Aosorath said confidently.
**Why do you say that?** D'cal asked curiously.
}:I don't know. I just know.:{ "Well, Aosorath hope you Impress too," the weyrling said with a smile. He hoped his little blue was right. It was the first time he had ever talked about someone that way.
Tamajan smiled and took a step back, glancing at D'cal. In spite of his carelessness, the color of Aosorath's hide hadn't escaped Tamajan. There were questions he wanted to ask his friend, but now didn't seem like the best time. Not in front of Aosorath, at least... "I hope he's right!" "Me too," D'cal smiled at his friend. "There is nothing so wonderful as finding a lifemate on the sands."
"How long do you think it will be until the Hatching?" Tamajan asked, turning back to D'cal. "I think I'll just get nervous if I have to wait a long time..." "Not long now, I should think. But remember, if you don't Impress the first time, it won't be long before there will be more eggs on the sand."
"But you Impressed the first time," Tamajan replied excitedly. "Didn't you?
Maybe I will, too!" "That's very true," D'cal nodded. "It does happen. I'm just saying if it _doesn't_ happen this time, you can't give up."
Tamajan nodded seriously. "I won't." He hesitated for a moment, wondering if now was the time to ask his questions. He'd have plenty of time, though, so he hurried on with a different question. "Where were you going when I interrupted you? To eat?"
"I was thinking about it. It is about that time," his friend nodded.
"Oh, good." Tamajan edged closer to D'cal, lowering his voice. "I don't like eating in there alone. There's this... girl. She keeps saying things to me..." Tamajan's ears had turned red. "Can I come eat with you?"
D'cal threw his head back and laughed, clapping his young friend on the shoulder. "Of course you can!" He remembered how confusing girls could be when he first arrived to. And sometimes _still_ could be confusing.
