Description: Paetri learns more on her craft
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 4 of Turn 7
W'ser had agreed that during his evening rounds he would allow Paetri
to go with him and observe. He certainly had no problems with the
Junior Weyrling wanting to get a more advanced look at Dragonhealing.
The Weyrdragonhealer was always more than happy to share his craft
with those eager to learn. He had just put a few things in his satchel
and tossed it over his shoulder when he looked up to see her standing
at his office door.
"Good evening, Paetri," he smiled, "how was class?"
Offering W'ser an easy smile, Paetri spoke softly. "It was busy. It
seems to be just getting busier, really. But I guess it's supposed to
be. Has it been a rough day?"
"It has been okay." He replied as he came over to her and handed her a
clipboard and sharpened piece of charcoal, "For note taking." W'ser
explained as he led the way down the hall to the dragon infirmary.
Their first destination was to check in on a young blue who had taken
some direct flame from another dragon during Threadfall.
taking the clipboard, she followed and then paused as they came upon
the blue. She had seen wounds, but they had mostly been minor. Turning
a bit green around the mouth, she swallowed. "What happened?"
"Took the current wrong and flew into a wingmate's flame. It could
have been worse, they were lucky." W'ser said as he sat his satchel
down and stepped closer to the blue, "Good evening, Vafreth." He
spoke, knowing that Branth would relay anything the blue said. "So
when I check his wounds I am looking for infection. Infectious may
have an odor and usually have caused the flesh to change color or
produce discharge. We want the wound to be a nice pink or red."
"Smell the wound. Right." Paetri swallowed a little, but took a deep
breath and stepped closer, just as W'ser did, even though her stomach
quailed. She had to steel her spine and closer her eyes for a moment.
This was part of the job. She took another breath and nodded. " What
is the treatment?"
"There are a few different herbs that treat healing, it's really up to
the healer which they want to use. On this fella we are using a witch
hazel ointment to help keep the wound clean and to encourage healing.
Of course, numbweed as well to keep Vafreth as comfortable as
possible."
Her brow furrowed. "I smelled the hazel. " She jotted down on the
notes. "Does this happen often?"
W'ser finished his observation, felt that the dragon was healing well,
and turned to Paetri, "It doesn't happen as often in Threadfall, but
you will see it more from the Weyrlings when they are first learning
to flame. There is usually always at least one injury during that
lesson."
She grimaced and nodded, making a mental note to avoid that injury if
at all possible. "What else is a common injury?"
"Threadscore is obviously the most common dragonic injury that you
will see. Scrapes and cuts, nothing usually too damaging, tend to come
in after gold flights. There are usually always a few Weyrling dragons
that come in with a sick stomach, because they ate something they
shouldn't, or who have pulled a muscle by trying to fly before they
were really able." W'ser told her as they moved on to the next
patient.
She made her notes and then glanced at W'ser. "Do you think, perhaps,
I could help you treat a few wounds? To let me get used to it?"
W'ser looked down at the list of patients he was going to visit that
day, "I suppose it wouldn't hurt. We'll go to Uralth next, he got into
a pretty nasty tangle of Thread. Since it will be the most common
injury you treat it will be a good place for you to start." He said
while leading the way over to the brown dragon who was resting
peacefully.
"Good afternoon, Uralth." W'ser spoke, rubbing a hand along the
brown's back flank. **Ask him to extend his wing please so I can
reach.** He instructed Branth.
Uralth gave a low rumble, but extended his wing, reveal the middle
section that had been heavily bandaged.
"First things first, let's get these off." He cut the ties that held
the bandage, and discarded the old cloths.
"Now, clean the wound, put on some fresh numbweed, and I'll help you
wrap it." He instructed Paetri.
She knew how to clean to wound based on the first aid classes that she
had been given during classes and as she carefully flushed it and
patted it dry, her brow knit in concentration. "It's right on the
wingsail. Couldn't that hurt his flying?"
"Absolutely," W'ser stood just behind the girl, watching her work,
"which is why this big fella has been grounded and is staying here in
the infirmary with us, rather than in his weyr." He noted that Paetri
worked with meticulous detail and a steady hand, good attributes for
any kind of healer.
