Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 6 of Turn 7
Rorela plopped down in the dining hall and kicked her feet up, giving
a loud sigh of relief. It had been a long day and she was more than
willing to relax, have a glass of wine and perhaps find someone to
cuddle with. To make it worse, she was a little bored as well. Drills
were all well and good of course, but there was this innate need to
have fun within her that simply couldn't be denied. She glanced around
the dining hall, pondering her options.
"A hard day?" G'nir stopped by to ask. He was carrying his food tray.
Orginally, he was just going to walk past her, and take his meal in
his weyr.
She looked up, surprised. Normally, outside of wingmeetings, G'nir
didn't pay her much attention. She tilted her head and flashed a grin.
"No harder than most, lately. I'm tired and a bit bored." She paused
and gestured to the seat next to her. "Have a seat. Keep me company."
"All right," he said with neutral tone. He saw no harm in that.
Although he tended to keep away greenriders in his wing to avoid
giving wrong impression and to avoid complications that inter-wing
relationships meant. Besides he had Hygalia. He did actually like
Rorela, and now that she was his Third, they were working more
together and he felt the actually need to learn to know each other bit
better.
She eyed him as he sat, her eyes flicking over the familiar profile of
her Weyrleader. It was the first time they'd actually spent any time
together outside of wing meetings since they were weyrlings; she
supposed their lives were just too different. It was a pity really;
she honestly liked the man. Her lips curled upwards. "Don't worry. I
won't bite. Unless you ask me to."
"What, and try to explain the marks to Hygalia?" G'nir replied with
his lips curling upwards to amused smile. Yes, he did have sense of
humour and he even occasionally let people see it.
Rorela's grin widened. "Tell her I was just too naughty for you to control."
"She just might believe it," G'nir arched his eyebrow. "Are you
regretting becoming a wingthird already?"
Both brows rose. "Regret it?" She shook her head and leaned towards
him slightly." G'nir, the only think I regret about the wingthird
position is that you'll look at me as less than a woman than you
already did." She was blunt, but kept her rueful smile. She then
shrugged it off. "But I actually do enjoy it." She paused and thrust
out her lower lip in thought. "Why do you ask?"
"I don't know...I just wondered if you liked being wingthird," G'nir
replied with a shrug. "And what do you mean, I don't look you as a
woman?"
Rorela arched a brow and dropped her foot from the table, letting the
chair settled down with a slight thump as she turned to look at the
Weyrleader. She smiled and shook her head. "G'nir, you're not a stupid
man, but sometimes I wonder if you're a bit blind. How long have we
known each other? And yet, this is the first time you've ever really
sat and tried to have a real conversation with me. When we were
candidates and weyrlings, did you never notice that I followed you
around like a little pup?" Her eyes twinkled merrily; she found a
certain humor in it now. "I'm a rider to you, you silly man. Not a
woman. " She bent and mock whispered. "You were always looking at
shinier hides."
"Maybe I am," G'nir made no secret of his ambitiousness. "When we were
weyrlings, you were so much younger than I was. In that age, the
difference still mattered. Besides, I've always been fond you you,
like you were my little sister. I'm not very good at showing it, just
ask any member of my family." It was a confession from his part.
She winced. Sister, shards...that was the last thing she wanted to be
viewed as. She eyed him, rested her chin on her hand and smiled.
"Sisters don't grab your rump for a feel, now do they?" Her dimples
flashed. "But it's okay, G'nir. I know that if you didn't like me as a
rider, you'd not have even thought of promoting me. I was honored by
that and I'm not going to disappoint you."
"I know you'll do a good job. I didn't choose you from a whim. I spent
a long time considering different options," G'nir said.
Her smile was rueful. "I'm sure you did. You don't do anything by
halves." She tilted her head to the side. "G'nir, seriously, do you
ever have any fun? Just try to enjoy yourself?"
"Yes, I do," G'nir replied with a steady gaze.
She crossed her arms. "Name one thing that you do that doesn't involve
riding, necessity or leadership in anyway that you do for the pure fun
of it."
He gave her a cocky smirk, "It usually involves a pretty girl and bed..."
*Any pretty girl except me, you mean.* Rorela's mouth twisted at his
smirk and then she rolled her eyes. "Everyone does _that_, G'nir and
you could have any girl in the weyr that you wanted. I'm talking about
fun. Outrageous, spontaneous fun. Something unexpected."
"Hmm, good book and glass of wine obviously doesn't qualify," G'nir
murmured thoughtfully.
He was bit lacking on hobbies. He was also sure that taking his
daughter on dragonrider just to hear her squall with joy and see the
shine in her eyes didn't qualify either.
"Nope!" Rorela chirped. She leaned over to him. "Don't tell me that
our esteemed Weyrleader can't be spontaneous and fun." She gasped as
if in shock. "G'nir..." She tsked with her tongue, eyes glinting
merrily. "have you become..." She paused dramatically, "...old?"
"Now you're just being cruel," G'nir accused, pointing her with a
fork. "Weyrleaders don't have time for fun."
Rorela kept her smile. "Oh yes they do. Other Weyrleaders manage." She
eyed the fork and arched a brow, her expression gleefully mischevous.
"Why, Weyrleader, if you want to poke me, you don't need a fork."
"Be careful what you wish for, I might comply..." G'nir said and
grinned suddenly. He found himself enjoying the banter with her... a
new experience to him. He usually just acted like this around other
males.
"Promises, promises, G'nir." Rorela matched his grin, his smile
lighting her own. She had finally gotten him to lighten up, if only a
little. It was a start. "You could never keep up with me, and you know
it."
