Another Hatching, another disappointment. Ciendra hadn't Impressed this
time either. It tended to press one's mood low and the mood lingered days
after the Hatching. Ciendra buried herself to the work in the kitchen.
Making herself useful, so no one would thought about sending her back to
Green Valley.
"Ciendra, if you scrub that pan one more time, the finish is going to come
off," Qorri admonished, seeing the girl's nervousness coming out into her
work. She had a guess as to what was going through the young woman's mind
and she wished Ciendra would just voice it.
"Sorry, ma'am," Ciendra said with a sheepish expression on her face. She
rinsed the pan and hung it to dry.
"Sorry, aye. And distracted. What's going on here?" Qorri wasn't too stern
but her tone demanded answers. For those familiar with the Headwoman, they
would see an advice-giving coming on.
"I didn't Impress this time either," Ciendra said, fiddling with her
apron's lace. "What if I'm just not good enough and I got sent back to
Green Valley?" her face twisted and her voice betrayed how much she feared
return to the Hold.
"Ciendra, as long as you do your share of the work, no one will be sending
anyone back. I didn't Impress and I'm still here, aren't I?" Of course
Qorri had never Stood, but that wasn't the point. The place wasn't just
populated by dragonriders or Weyrbred. They needed new Blood every now and
again.
Ciendra had never really thought about the Headwoman's background.
"Really?" she asked.
"Really. All those dragonriders don't have time to be having the babies and
washing the laundry and cooking the bread and all the other things
necessary to keep this Weyr going, do they?" She smiled at the girl's
naivete.
" S'pose not," Ciendra said. Impulsively, she hugged the Headwoman.
A brow raised in reaction to that gesture, but Qorri didn't refuse it. "So
come on now and stop moping around. I won't have it."
"Yes, ma'm," Ciendra replied and pulled back.
"I was going to ask you-do you ever get around that boy, Amitko? How does
he seem to be doing in his candidate classes?" Her curiosity was growing in
that direction, though she could easily have followed up with the
weyrlingstaff.
"I've fetched some meat from him and seen him around classes and barracks,
but I haven't really talked with him," Ciendra replied with a shrug of her
shoulders. She still tended to be shy, especially around boys.
"Well be wary of him, my girl. There's just something there..." Qorri
supposed it would sort itself out but Ciendra was a sweet girl and she
would hate to see her wrapped up in anything.
"A what? He seems to be sulking a lot," Ciendra asked. She was getting
curious now.
"I don't know yet, but it's a feeling. Women's intuition. Anyway, you
listen to me, allright?" Qorri hoped that Ciendra wasn't foolish.
"Yes, M'am," Ciendra promised with a nod. Any way, the only boy she was
truly interested in was L'cor.
