He had only arrived days before. Things were a bit different in a crafthall versus his family's cothold, but not too much. Looking around, he made it to his first course, adjusting his new knots. Life as a junior apprentice meant he was on the bottom of the barrel and he recognized that. He needed to make friends-fast.

Keayd watched the line of apprentices file out of the dorm. He could still remember how it felt, excited, nervous and overwhelmed, all at once.

When he sat down and saw the journeyman up there teaching, Rohagelen settled down to listen. Absorbing as much as he could, he was glad when things were over. Still, when the course ended, he went up to the man to introduce himself. That was proper right? "Excuse me sir?"

"Yes, apprentice?" Keayd asked.

"My name is Rohagelen. I'm new here. I just wanted to say that it was a good lesson, but I don't understand the point of how the air can change the grapes." Of course the boy knew about growing things, but air? That had never factored into the equation.

"It's not as much as air but the combination of air temperature and moisture. And of course, if the air is filled with smoke from fires, the smell kind of gets absorbed to the grapes," Key replied. He was patient teacher and therefore often ended up with the youngest of apprentices.

"Really? And it affects the taste?" He had never thought about that before. Just wait till he told his father about all the things he was learning.

"Yes, a little bit," Key smiled.

"Hmmmm okay then." That was enough to think about for now. Rohagelen turned to go, ready to head to his next course. He had already decided that he liked Keayd though.

Key picked up his hides and accidentally pushed some of them off the desk. "Shells," he muttered.

Hearing the noise, his automatic response was to turn back around. Seeing the hides, he bent down to get them since it was only proper. It didn't take him long really. Gathering them up, he set them back on the desk. "Here you go sir."

"Thank you," Keayd said. His club foot was aching today so he was grateful of the help.

"Ah you're welcome." He saw the pain in Keayd's face but didn't think he should remark upon it. Whenever men at the Hold had been hurting, the attitude was always to be quiet and keep it to yourself. The less anyone knew, the stronger you were. Rohagelen was one to suffer in silence.

Keayd had been brought up by same standards and tried his best cover up the pain. He stood up. "It's the lunch break, you don't want to miss the meal," he said gently.

"Ah no. Anyway, thanks for the lesson." Leaving the room, he wondered about the journeyman. With his obvious injury, he would never have lasted in a Hold since he couldn't have worked as hard as the others. He supposed he never would have Impressed either. So perhaps a craft was the perfect place for him

Keayd followed the apprentice more slowly to the dinning hall. He should talk with Chupsin and ask for more herbs for the pain. It always seemed to get worse this time of the Turn.
