W'ser

W'ser

W'ser had heard about the little incident that Paetri and her green
had experienced during their first attempts at /between/. The
brownrider was a seasoned dragonrider and as the Weydragonhealer, he
had worked with many dragonets on things related to flying and
/between/ing. He appreciated, perhaps more than some, the hard work
that J'darin and Hasaarth put into their Weyrlings.

Coming from his office, W'ser immediately caught sight of Paetri, she
looked as if she were getting ready to stock some cabinets. W'ser had
gotten the feeling that the young greenrider found the dragon
infirmary to be a place where she could think and be alone. Walking to
where she was, W'ser casually leaned against a nearby desk, "Paetri,"
he glanced at the time piece, "I thought you would be enjoying some
free time away from classes right now."

Paetri nearly dropped the bandages that she had clutched in her hand;
she'd been so concentrated on getting things stocked that she hadn't
paid attention to the sound of boots coming up behind her. She fumbled
for a moment, caught them before they dropped and spun to face W'ser.
Her face flushed and she hurriedly put the bandages in the closet.
"Oh. Hello, W'ser." She picked up another bottle and opened a cabinet.
"I am enjoying my free time. I like being in the infirmary. Besides,
I'm on duty this evening, so I just thought I'd get a head start."

W'ser shook his head. Paetri was probably the hardest working person
that he knew. Even _he_ enjoyed doing something else every now and
then. But perhaps when she found a young man that suited her interests
her desire to be in the dragon infirmary so often would dwindle. "I
heard about what happened at Weyrling practice the other day." He led
in, wondering if she might like to talk about it.

Paetri immediately cringed and glanced at W'ser. "Everyone has." She
sighed and began shoving bottles and vials into place a little more
firmly than necessary. "I did it right the next morning. I made sure I
did it right. I'm not making a mistake like that again." Gauze was
packed tightly into boxes.

"Hey," W'ser touched her shoulder lightly, "no need to cringe over it.
Things happen. You don't see dragonriders hanging their heads over
their Threadscores do you? And many of those happen because of
mistakes. Shards, most men brag about theirs." The brownrider smiled a
little, "Sometimes it is easy to have those little thoughts running
around in your mind while you are getting ready to go somewhere."

The Weyrdragonhealer decided to share one of his own experiences,
hoping it would make Paetri feel better, "One time I was on my way to
the beach, I had my swimming gear already on, and idiotically enough,
no coat. Just as we were getting ready to /between/ I started thinking
about how nice it was going to be at the warm beach, not cold and
snowy like it was when I visited High Reaches once upon a time." He
shook his head, "When I opened my eyes we were right up above High
Reaches Weyr in the freezing cold with snow blowing around us. Can you
imagine how silly I looked to the watchdragon and his rider all decked
out in my beach gear?"

"How embarrassing. I hadn't been the Weyrdragonhealer that long either
and word quickly got back here. As it always does."

She finally smiled a little and then chuckled softly at his story. "I
guess that would be embarassing, and cold." Her brow furrowed. "It
just made me realize how much I have to pay attention to things, I
guess. My whole class saw me and it scared them all. And it scared
Camilth more than anything. She thought she had done something wrong."

"That is natural when a dragon is young. Once she has matured more she
will be perfectly confident in telling you what _you_ did wrong. Trust
me, Branth does it all the time." W'ser said this wryly, even as he
felt his dragon stir at the mention of his name.

Paetri had to give a rueful smile at that. "I don't see her as ever
really growing up. She's...flighty. But, I guess most greens are." She
turned back to her stocking and finished with the vials. "You don't
mind me being here early...do you?"

"Of course not. The infirmary is always open to you." W'ser assured
her with a smile. Really, if he had a daughter, he imagined she would
be like Paetri.

She gave an odd relieved smile and some measure of tension flowed out
of her shoulders. "Good. I know I'll be busy being a senior weyrling
now, but I don't want to fall behind here either, so if I can, I'll be
spending my free time here."

W'ser understood that, he had spent a lot of time in the dragon
infirmary as well, of course, Thread had not been falling then so it
was a little different. Pushing up from the table, the
Weyrdragonhealer rolled up his sleeves, "Well, I have some rounds to
make. Let me know if you need anything."

Paetri stopped and looked over her shoulder. "Can I help?"

The man turned and glanced back at the Weyrling ,"Grab your clip board
and let's go."
