K'mai knocked politely on the door, hoping she would answer this time.
He'd come by before, but either she had been out or she chose not to
answer the door.
There was soft footsteps and the door opened slowly, Bahji's face
appearing. Her brow knit immediately. "Hello? Who is it?"
"It's K'mai. Do you mind if I come in? I'd like to talk to you."
"Oh..K'mai." She opened the door a little more. "Sure, I suppose." She
didn't know him well and had only met him a bare few times, but knew
he was one of the few people E'rae called a close friend. "Come in."
She backed away from the door to give him room.
He stepped inside and waited a moment before saying, "I don't know if
E'rae said anything because sometimes he's a thick as a rock, but he's
worried about you."
She had figured it was about E'rae. She sat on the edge of her bed and
gestured towards where she knew the chair was for him to sit. "No he
didn't say much to me. The last time we spoke, it was to tell me what
I did wrong." Her fingers twined. "I was trying to show him that I
_was_ okay."
"He doesn't understand why you went down to that flight, why you would
risk a stranger grabbing you." K'mai considered his words. "You do
understand ... well, you were with E'rae, you know dragonlust can be
intense."
Bahji immediately flushed and shifted on her seat, clearly
embarrassed. "Because maybe I wanted him to know that I was okay with
that part of his life. That I wanted to be a part of that part of his
life. I knew the risks. I thought...I thought if he saw that I was
willing to take those risks, he'd know that I was dedicated to this
life....the life he was a part of..." She sighed and shook her head.
"It was stupid."
He suspected that might be the case and had told E'rae as much. "It
might have been unwise not to talk to him about this before you did
it, but I don't think you're stupid. I think you're doing your best to
find your way."
She turned her face away. "He doesn't have to worry about that again,
believe me. Good Hold girls don't do that sort of thing." Her voice
was a little sharp. "Never mind that I'm not a hold girl anymore."
"Was he rude to you about it?" K'mai asked. E'rae could be a bit ... abrupt.
Bahji's head bowed, still turned away. "He was mad at me. He raised
his voice. He was angry." Her voice held an edge of hurt anger of her
own. "I felt bad that I ...that I enjoyed it." She lifted her chin
back up and her back stiffened. "He made it sound like I was
some...some..girl that would be with anyone. That I wanted that."
"There's nothing wrong with that. Sex feels good, and you can have it
with whoever you want." Holders had such strange ideas. "You aren't
weyrmated to E'rae, he didn't mention that you'd made any promises to
each other. So if you _did_ want sex with other people, that's up to
you."
"So why was he so upset?" Her head turned to him, clearly unsure and
not understanding. "Why can't he talk to me about all this? And why
can't he see that I'm not going to fall apart if he's not there to
watch?" Her hands fisted in frustration before she took several deep
breaths to try to calm herself. "It wasn't fair of him to do or say
those things. I don't understand."
"E'rae is ... not very skilled when it comes to people. And he's
holdbred so he might still carry around some of those notions." He put
a gentle hand on her arm. "But he does care for you. I hope you'll
consider talking to him about this. Tell him how you feel."
"I don't know if I want to." She admitted.
He wanted to see both of them happy, even though he knew things didn't
always work out. "At least think about it."
She nodded and spoke softly. "I'll think about it."
"Thanks. I hope you can be happy here, I really do." He patted her arm.
"Thank you, K'mai. For trying. You're a good friend to him."
"I'm such a good friend that I've restrained from flirting with you,"
he said with a laugh.
She immediately blushed. "He probably wouldn't like that much."
"Like I said, a good friend. You're a lovely, sweet young woman,
Bahji," he said. "I suppose I should let you get back to whatever I
interrupted." A loom and yarns were set up in the small space.
She gave him a half-smile and rose from her seat. "I'll think about
what you said, K'mai. Maybe it will work out."
