Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 5, day 2 of Turn 7

Ciendra slipped in from the opened door to Headwoman's room. She never been
to her quarters before.
Qorri was busily packing her things. Some of them she would give away
rather than take with her, but it was hard sorting
through turns of accumulation. It was also hard knowing she would never
live with the level of comfort she was used to.
It would be back to her traveling days when she went from place to place,
never knowing exactly what was to come.
"Qorri," Ciendra said almost timidly. "You really are leaving?" She hadn't
quite believed it when she had heard the news.
Standing up and turning around, Qorri relaxed when she saw it was only
Ciendra. "Aye I am, Ciendra girl." She kept working,
knowing she needed to get it done. She didn't have the luxury of time or
the benefit of help.
"I...I'm sorry you're leaving," Ciendra sounded choked. She had grown
attached to Qorri during the time she'd been in the Weyr and was going to
miss her.
"Me too Ciendra, but sometimes you have to do things that are best for you
even if they're hard." She had done that before and
she had managed so eventually it would be okay. Qorri just had to keep
going. As long as there was work to do, she would be fine.
"Don't worry. Someday you'll get a dragon and then you can visit me
whenever you want."
"That day seems so far off," Ciendra said sadly. She was just 14, they
didn't even want her to Impress yet, since she wouldn't be
graduating directly to the fighting wings.
"Could be sooner than you think. Or maybe if you knew a rider, you could
catch a ride from time to time." Qorri smiled and tried her
best to be reassuring. The truth was, she didn't want to abandon the
children. It wasn't their fault. They didn't understand. Still, she
couldn't work like that so there was no choice.
Ciendra nodded wordlessly and wrung her hands, unable to find the words she
wanted to say.
Putting her things down, she turned to face Ciendra. "Now listen. Don't you
cry for me. Don't worry, I'll be fine. And as for you, you
will be too. Just keep your head down, do your duties, and you'll be okay."
She didn't know who would be chosen to replace her out
of the eligible candidates she had recommended.
"I will miss you," Ciendra said with little sniff and then straightened her
back. She would be brave and not cry like some little girl.
Not for the first time, Qorri found herself mentally cursing N'vanik. He
was going to put a canine in the middle of these babies and there
would be no one to protect them. Sighing, she nodded and approved of
Ciendra's straightening. "I'll miss you too. You do me proud though,
you hear?"
"Yes, ma'am," Ciendra replied firmly.
