"I heard you needed a hand." Z'ku stood on the shore and smiled.
Pierka looked like she'd swallowed a large ball, though it probably
wasn't wise to share that observation with her.
"Oh Z'ku," she smiled. "You're a lifesaver. She has an itch up on her
back where I can't reach."
"No problem." He picked up a brush and waited for Liddith to give him
a boost. "Are you doing okay otherwise?"
"Yes," she smiled. "Just tired a lot of the time and I'm starting to
waddle like a fat Wherry."
Z'ku climbed up and from his perch on Liddith's back, he said, "You're
still pretty, even if you are as big as a Hold."
"Well thank you, I think..." she grinned up at him. If there was
anyone in the Weyr that had been as consistent a friend through all
the junk she'd gone through Pierka couldn't think of anyone better
than Z'ku.
She knew he had a rather wild reputation but he wasn't that way with
her. "Hey," she said, "Want to come to my weyr for dinner tonight?
They're starting to deliver since I'm getting closer to having this
baby."
"Sure." He scrubbed the green's hide, trusting she'd let her rider
know if he was getting the right spot. "Do you have a foster parent
picked out yet?"
"A little to the left," she called up to him. "Not yet," she added. "I
figure someone will tell me soon what my options are."
"You're not worried about who will be taking care of the baby?" he
asked as he shifted.
"Of course I am," she said and sighed. "But Qorri was taking care of
it... and now she's gone. I don't even know who to talk to."
Yes, Qorri. What a mess. No one seemed to know exactly why she'd left.
"Maybe Weyrwoman Cyradis could help?"
"I'm sure she probably could and I guess that's where I'll have to go
but..." Pierka was still a little shy of the Weyrleaders. It didn't
really matter that she'd once... well he'd once won one of her
flights. That did make her blush a little still. "I don't know why I'm
scared to talk to her about it. It's not like she's mean or anything."
"I could go with you if that would help."
"Would you really?" She smiled up at him.
"Of course. Anything to help you." He moved a little to the side.
While he was up there, he might as well keep scrubbing Liddith.
"Thanks Z'ku," she smiled and not for the first time wished he'd been
the father of her baby instead of T'nom. Then things wouldn't have
gotten so complicated. He was just a friend, but had proved himself to
be a good friend.
"There's another spot toward the base of her tail. It itches."
He scooted down to the spot, aware of how much smaller the green was
compared to Xemroth. He was tempted to ask if she had any idea why
Liddith hadn't chosen him for her Flight, but that was sure to be
uncomfortable. He was still trying to shake the jealousy. "Do you
think it's a boy or a girl?"
She smiled at the question. Everyone asked even though everyone knew
there was no way to tell. "I think it's a boy," she said. "I can't'
really tell you why. It just seems that way."
"I can see you with a cute little boy. And he'll grow up to be a
bronzerider. Or maybe a nice, steady brown. Bronzeboys are little
crazy." He smiled.
"Yes you are," she laughed at him. "Though some are nicer than others.
When they aren't all self important and stuff."
He laughed, too. "You can help me keep my ego in check." Although
Meledei had done quite a nice job of that. Z'ku closed that thought
down.
She laughed too "I do try. Just let me know when it threatens to run
away with you." She finished Liddith's tail then looked back up. "Well
you should get down. She's going to rinse."
Z'ku slid easily off the green, splashing into the shallow water. "So
... dinner?"
"Yes please," she smiled. "I'm famished."
