Description: Yanley and Ninaine reconnect
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 5 of Turn 7
Yanley was actually looking for her. While recording in newly Searched
candidates, she had spotted a familiar name.
Now that she was recovered enough to go around, she had started
working, as a headwoman's assitant. With Hatching approaching, the
Headwoman certainly needed help and Yanley was good at organizing
things. Since Daley still took most of her time, her work was part
time right now. Knowing the candidate schedule, she was heading
towards the dining cavern, Daley on a sling against her body.
Ninaine left the dining cavern, smoothing her skirts with a tsk of her
lips. While she understood adapting to one's environment, some things
were simply not to be done. She gave a sniff and turned a corner, only
to stop, gasp and dip into a deep curtsey. "Lady Yanley!"
"Ninaine!" Yanley gave a delighted smile. "I saw you name in a list on
a recently Searched candidates. This is incredible."
Standing straight, Ninaine wasn't sure how to outwardly react. She had
always enjoyed working for Yanley as a personal maid, had had
propriety drilled into her, but what Yanley had done had flown in the
face off all that she had been taught! But she did adore her former
mistress. She finally gave a shaky smile and her shoulders relaxed a
little. "My Lady. I am pleased to see you." She looked at the baby in
her lady's arms and shifted on her feet, instinctively wanting to go
and see the small infant. "Uhm...may I?"
"You probably shouldn't call me Lady around here," Yanley said with
drol tone. "Of course," she took the baby of the sling so Ninaine
could hold him.
"But that is who you are." Ninaine replied simply. "That didn't
change, no matter where you are. You're of the Blood and I'm not going
to disrespect you." She turned and then carefully took the child. Her
face softened. "He's precious, Lady. I'm...I'm happy that you finally
have a child."
"I am happy about him too," Yanley said with a smile. She had tried
and dreamed of child so long.
Ninaine stroked a finger over the babe's soft cheek. "I'll be working
in the creche when I'm not in classes. It seems like a good place and
I like children. It's different than when I was with you, though." She
sighed and reluctantly gave the child back. She looked at Yanley, her
former mistress. "I could help you again too, if you like."
"Thank you, Ninaine. We can see if we can get something arranged with
the headwoman," Yanley said. "He's certainly a good deal of work," she
winked happily. "Now, tell me the recent news from Amber Hills!"
"You know I don't mind the work. The lessons are more than I expected,
but I prefer to be busy." And she didn't find much in common with her
fellow candidates. She knew Genna, of course, but she and the girl had
never really been close. Their personalities were far too different.
She perked up a little at Yanley's interest. "Well...the latest news I
suppose is that the Guard Captain is marrying again. His former wife's
sister. They weren't courting for very long before he asked for her
hand. It was a little surprising. And Lord Zathris and Benani both
have canines now that are being trained."
"So Karhal is marrying Loella, well, well, well," Yanley said with
knowing smile.
"She finally caught him where she wants him."
"Will you be going to the wedding? I hear that the reception was
planned by Lady Benani herself. I'm sure she'd be happy to see you."
"I'm sure she would, but I'm not so sure others would be as
welcoming," Yanley replied with a sad shake of her head.
Ninaine couldn't refute that. In her own way, she had been embarrassed
by what had occurred with Yanley and her dragonrider; she couldn't
understand what had led her Lady to behave in such a fashion, but
Yanley was her mistress and it wasn't her place to question her. "I do
have a letter for you from Lady Benani."
"Oh, how lovely. Sometimes Petriv brings me letters when he delivers
the tithe beasts," Yanley said.
Pausing, Ninaine lowered her voice and spoke softly. "Benani also
suggested I speak to you about..." She cleared her throat.
"maintaining proper decorum while I am here. If I do not Impress, I'll
need to be able to go back to Amber Hills in good reputation."
"Ah, yes. Of course," Yanley said with knowing nod. "It does make
sense and I'm glad to help you in that regard," she continued. It
looked like she was going to have two protegees, Genna and now
Ninaine. Yanley had also lived in the Weyr long enough to realize that
maintaining that good reputation might turn out to be a quite a
different dilemma, if she _did_ Impress. From what she had learned,
entering a Mating Flight without any previous experience could turn
out be..nasty. But she wasn't sure how to tell that to Ninaine.
Ninaine was always so prim and proper. In her age, Yanley had been
anything but. She had ridden like man, spent time in the stables and
prefered riding in trousers (which had horrified the Hold's Ladies).
No, she had been wild and rebellous.
"I'm not worried so much, but Lady Benani thought it best that I fall
under your protection again and your..uhm...weyrmate, isn't it?"
"Yes. It's like having a husband but without the harper's ceremony,"
Yanley replied.
"I'd like to meet him...if that's alright."
"That's shouldn't be hard to arrange," Yanley replied.
