W'ser, as the Weyrdragonhealer, didn't often taken walk-in patients
any more, and usually only saw those dragons that were the most
serious. But today he found himself covering for one of his sick
journeyman. When the young brownrider walked in W'ser immediately
recognized him as D'ale's boy. Branth, of course, knew him as
Imalkyth's rider.
"Good afternoon, K'ale, what can I do for you?" W'ser set aside the
book that he had been reading.
"Well," K'ale started. "Imalkyth is complaining about a pain in his
foot. I've looked at the claws but don't see anything there." He
shrugged his helplessness. "Sorry to bother you with something so
small."
W'ser waved off the apology, "Nothing is ever small when it comes to
your dragon." He assured K'ale with a smile, "Let's go have a look at
him then."
K'ale turned to follow the healer out to where Imalkyth waited
patiently. When he saw the healer coming he offered the offending hind
claw up for examination.
The dragonhealer ran his hands along the dragon's back foot, pushing,
prodding, and feeling for any irregularities, "When does he have the
pain?" W'ser asked, looking back at K'ale.
"On landing," he said. "It hurts when he walks too but not as much as landing."
"He probably over extended it," W'ser said as he continued feeling
about, "have him stretch his foot down, slowly, and let me know when,
or if, it pains him."
He had Imalkyth do what they'd been told and when he reached the point
where in began to hurt he stopped. "Right there."
W'ser studied the positioning of the foot, the angle at which it was
outstretched when the pain began, "Yes, I'm definitely thinking he's
just overextended the muscle there. Keep him off of it for a couple
of days, no jumping, no flying." It put a lot of strain on the joins
in the legs and feet for dragons to spring upwards when they took off
for flight, "Have some pretty green bring him some herdbeasts. He'll
enjoy the attention." The dragohealer winked.
K'ale chuckled," yes I can see he would like that. Alright," he said
after a moment of processing. "Do you think it's anything I did that
caused this?"
The dragonhealer shook his head, "Not necessarily, it is the same way
we sometimes roll our ankles, it just happens. A good way to be more
cautious is to have Imalkyth doing less vertical jumps on take off,
and try to jump at more of an angle."
That made sense and K'ale nodded. In his head he went over the wings
launching formation and figured he could back them up a few steps to
make a difference and still end up in the correct position in the air.
"I think I know how to make that happen," He smiled at the dragon
healer. "Thank you."
"No problem," W'ser waved the thanks off with a smile, "it's something
all dragonriders experience at some point. Although I would wager some
have egos too big to come by and ask about it."
"Yes sir," K'ale grinned. "I'm sure they do."
