Description: After losing his first mating flight, Rademerth seeks the advice
of an older dragon.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 10 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Jodeth, Camilth
Rademerth lay with his head on his forelimbs. It hadn't occurred to
him that he wouldn't catch Camilth. How could she choose another?
J'kri had tried to explain things to him but Rademerth still didn't
understand. Perhaps another dragon could help him. He thought of the
smartest dragon he knew.
}:Branth, have you caught a green?:{
Branth had been lounging, it was what the big brown did the most.
Maybe that was why he had such a hard time catching females? He never
spent much of his time courting them, but preferred to be laying in
the sun when he wasn't helping his rider with injured dragons.
}:Yes, I have.:{ He didn't want to talk about how many times he'd
flown and _not_ caught a green, }:Why do you ask?:{
}:I want to know how to catch one. Camilth was worthy to chase but did
not choose me. Now I think other greens might be worthy.:{ He'd been
spending more time watching them bathing and sunning.
Branth thought that perhaps the younger dragon was asking the wrong
dragon. Of course the brown knew _how_ to catch a green... But he
didn't have the best luck of it most of the times. What annoyed Branth
was that his rider didn't seem to mind "losing" flights. Probably
because he had his new weyrmate to turn to.
}:It's not about letting females have a choice in who flies them. You
have to be cunning, smart and one step ahead of them.:{
The blue got to his feet, spreading his wings wide. }:I am smart! I
can be cunning! Learned how to fly and go /between/ and chew
firestone. I learned many formations. I can learn to catch greens.:{
Branth would have raised an eyebrow, if he had any, }:A very helpful
way to get an advantage in a mating flight is to already know the
green beforehand.... Not just _know_ but having built a relationship
with her before the flight. She'll still be all wily and such at first
but when she's tired at the end of the flight she will think of you.
You just have to make sure that you've reserved your strength for that
moment.:{
}:Reserve my strength,:{ the blue repeated thoughtfully. He had chased
her as fast as he could. }:I know Camilth very well. We are
clutchmates and she is worthy of me.:{
}:You will come to realize that some greens want to be treated as if
they were a queen. So next time you say that sentence say that you
believe you could be worthy of her.:{ Branth rumbled back, giving the
mental equivalent of a shrug, }:But what do I know? I could count the
flights I've won on my talons at this point.:{ Of course that wasn't
counting the ones that dragon memory had inevitably made him forget.
Rademerth tilted his head. }:Have other dragons won many flights?:{
}:Some have.:{ Branth confirmed standing up to rub his flank against a
nearby rock, }:Some dragons are just lucky... Or maybe just better
flyers than the rest of us.:{
}:Do you know who has caught many greens?:{ The weyrlingmasters and
staff taught him and J'kri many things. Maybe he needed a teacher for
this, too.
Branth considered that for a moment, stretching his short memory as
far as it would go }:Jodeth has caught many greens. Perhaps you should
ask him.:{
Rademerth rumbled thoughtfully. }:Yes, I will ask Jodeth. I must learn
how to catch greens.:{
Branth supposed that he would just continue to be unlucky because
there was no way he was going to ask another dragon about how to catch
a green. He did have his pride intact after all. The brown resigned
himself to not catching greens. After all, they couldn't all be
winners.
