Pierka sat and looked at her breakfast. She should eat and she knew it
but it just didn't look appealing. She sighed and pushed it away
before standing to walk toward Liddith. For some reason her emotions
were in turmoil and she needed the support of her lifemate.

Liddith crooned to her as she approached and she leaned into the
unquestioning love.

"Z'ku?" She called as she walked across the Weyrbowl. She couldn't
believe what she had just heard from T'nom no less. "Can we talk
someplace private?"

>From her words and the look on her face, something was obviously
wrong. "Of course. Your weyr?" It was ground level and not far.

"Yes," she nodded and turned toward that side of the Weyrbowl. "I just
found T'nom in the dining hall," she started as they walked into the
darkness of her weyr. She reached up to turn some glows.

"Oh?"

"Yeah," she turned to face him. She wasn't happy about the news. She
didn't know if the goldrider was going to try and bring Z'ku back to
her side. She really hated being on the other end of a tug of rope.
She wasn't that kind of person and it troubled her that some people
might think she was.

"He broke up with Meledei and he is very angry."

Z'ku sighed, a cold feeling creeping into his stomach. "Well, I guess
that's good for you, then."

"No," she said slowly. "Not really. "But it might be for you," she
nodded. "That is if you still want your chance with Meledei." She
hoped he didn't because she had come to rely on him more than she
wanted to admit.

He shook his head. "Meledei had her chance." Even if a small part of
him still wanted it, the rest of him was too angry.

"Yeah," she said softly and stroked his upper arm. "I'm sorry Z'ku. I
wish I understood why she makes the decisions she does. But I'm very
thankful for your friendship."

"Thanks." At least they'd had each other to lean on during this. "So
you're not happy? Doesn't that mean he can be with you now?"

She shook her head and rolled her eyes. "He's not free of her, he's
just angry with her. She doesn't trust him and she accused him of
dishonesty and threw him out." She took a deep breath. "I don't need
to be his rebound. I have a baby coming and I need peace. Maybe after
the baby's born I'll think about it." She knew she still loved him but
right now wasn't a good time to try and build something out of the
ashes of his relationship with Meledei. He needed to get over her
first.

"I know how you feel. I don't want to be anyone's second choice." It
made him bitter and he hoped he'd stop hurting eventually.

"Exactly!" she said with an expansive hand gesture. Not for the first
time she was thankful that there was someone who could understand and
appreciate her position in all of this. She just felt that Meledei saw
her as some sort of competition when she herself knew that was far
from the truth. T'nom had picked... and it wasn't her. No matter what
happened in the future, that would always be hanging over her head.
"You deserve someone who wants only you Z'ku. You really do." Then she
grinned. He was a bronzerider with a lot more experience than she had
after all. "But in the meantime... just have fun."

Z'ku felt a pang, wishing Pierka was the one that wanted him. Not that
he was in love with her, at least he didn't think so, but he wanted to
know if there _could_ be more. He didn't want to risk their friendship
by saying anything. She had plenty to worry about with the baby coming
and all. Or, he wondered, maybe he was just very bad at being friends
with women and couldn't only think of them as friends without wanting
something more. He smiled at her comment. "I'm trying." His sexual
partners didn't mean anything to him, a way to feel good and pass the
time.

"Good," she smiled.

~*~

Pierka remembered as if it were yesterday though it had been weeks
since that whole conversation. She was conflicted about want she
wanted for her future but Z'ku was right. She was worth more.

She tucked some hair behind an ear and was preparing to go back inside
when the first contraction gripped her abdomen in a vice. "Ahhhhhhh,"
she groaned.

In that moment she could only think of one person. "Call Z'ku!"
