Description: Day after Hatching, Yanley tries to talk to Ninaine
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 7 of Turn 7
Yanley was annoyed that she didn't get an opportunity to talk with
Ninaine during the Hatching Feast or after it. She hadn't missed the
scene girl's parents had made and strongly disapproved it, and had
made her opinion known to them. She also felt responsible for Ninaine,
the girl was her protegee. Besides, she liked her, despite that she
sometimes thought the girl was too prim and proper.
As a part of headwoman's staff, Yanley had access to weyrlings'
schedules and seeked out her during her break.
"Nin! I want to talk with you," she called with friendly smile.
Walking away from the barracks, Ninaine's face was impassive, but
there was strain around her eyes as she turned. Sighting Yanley, she
immediately dipped into a curtsy of respect. "Lady Yanley." Luneth
eyed the interloper with no small degree of suspicion, the little
green interposing herself between the two as if she could some how
shield her lifemate from any possible danger. Ninaine immediately
soothed the green; it was becoming habit, this soothing of the
protective instinct. She did it almost without thinking, but the
little hatchling was still on edge.
"Ninaine. And this must be little Luneth. Pleased to meet you Luneth,"
Yanley said and greeted the little dragonet. The green's protective
gesture didn't escape her notice and she kept a distance, keeping her
voice warm and gentle. Her flits sensed the dragon's hostility too,
and positioned themselves between her and Luneth, chittering scolds at
her.
}:Who is that? Why is she here? Is she going to hurt you? Upset you?
Should I bite her?:{ Luneth's rapid fire questions shot at Ninaine and
she winced.
**No. You are not allowed to bite, you are not allowed to snap. You
know better. She is a friend. She's not going to hurt me.** Ninaine
sighed softly, sending gentle waves of calm to the little green. She
looked up at Yanley and nodded. "Yes, Lady. This is Luneth. Forgive
me, she's a little protective."
}: I don't like her. Tell her to go away. :{ Luneth shifted from foot
to foot. }: She's too close. :{
**She is a friend, Luneth.** Ninaine was firm. Luneth hadn't liked
many people at all. Not any, actually. She wondered if that was
normal. **You _will_ behave yourself.**
Luneth looked up at Ninaine and sat with a plop, visibly sulking, but
didn't respond.
"That's all right," Yanley said, barely hiding her amusement. "And you
two sillies, calm down," she told her flits and patted her shoulders.
Thi obeyed and landed on her shoulder but Bram kept circling in the
air, keeping wary eye on the dragonet.
"How are you doing, Ninaine? Your parents..." she shook hear head
sadly. People like Ninaine's parents were reason why she had moved to
Dragonsfall, had made it impossible to raise a dragonrider's child in
a hold.
The moment Yanley mentioned her parents, Ninaine?s took a breath,
buried her emotions and kept her face expressionless. ?I will be fine,
Lady. There was no help for it, I suppose.? Her voice stayed even but
the strain around her eyes never faded.
"No, it can not be helped...that they made fool of themself and that
their behaviour was inexcusable," there was steel and strong
disapproval in her voice.
Ninaine looked away from Yanley. She had felt much more a fool at the
time than her parents and she knew that many had overheard the
incident. It had been humiliating. "Not inexcusable. They had
expectations. I failed them."
"Ever occured to you that their expectations were bit unrealistic.
After all, there was only one gold egg and what, over ten greens?"
Ninaine stiffened. "I don't wish to talk about it, please."
"Hah, don't try that on me, young lady," Yanley said with her best
Lady Holder-voice and crossed her arms. "You have to, or it will
fester and become a problem."
For an instant, Ninaine struggled. She didn?t want to talk about it
and Yanley had never pushed her. But it was so ingrained in her to
obey someone of higher station that she turned back to Yanley and
dipped a curtsey, but kept her face averted. ?If you insist.?
"I insist. I want to know how _you_feel, how _you're_ doing. Not how
your parents say you should be feeling," Yanley could be presistent
when she wanted to.
"I'm fine." She answered primly. "I'm doing my duty as required of me.
My feelings in the matter do not matter. Luneth is what matters, Lady.
Now please, my break is only for a candlemark."
"Your feelings are exactly _what_ matters. I'm sure Luneth will agree
with me. Especially since your feelings will affect her," Yanley did
know that much of dragons.
She looked down at Luneth, words bubbling at her mouth that she
refused to release. The little green looked up at her and butted her
head gently against her leg, receiving gentle strokes of fingers as a
response. What was she supposed to say to Lady Yanley? That she hated
the Weyr? That she was miserable? That she hated what she was going to
become? That if it were not for Luneth, she would have...She locked
that thought away. That was an image that Luneth never needed to see.
?I?m fine.?
Yanley cocked her eyebrow at that. She didn't _look_ fine. She
adressed Luneth: "I'm going to hug your rider now. If you bite me,
I'll bite back." Then she did exactly that. Stepped closer and wrapped
her arms around the girl. "Ninaine, dear, I know you too well," she
said with gentle tone. "You're not fine. Your struggling to adjust
your new life. Life you're not prepared for."
Luneth may not have bitten, but the hatchling had other ways of
voicing her displeasure. She threw a draconic tantrum. Stomping her
feet, the little green shrieked her displeasure, slapping her tail
against the ground before darting to shove in between Ninaine and
Yanley. }: No! No! Mine! All Mine! Tell her to go away! No touching!
No touching! Mine!! :{ Eyes whirled bright shades of red and yellow
and the little green hopped frantically between the pair, spreading
her wings and hissing.
Ninaine winced at the high pitched mental squeals of anger and
immediately pulled away from Yanley, crouching to wrap her arms around
Luneth in attempt to soothe the dragon's tantrum. **Luneth, stop! Stop
it right now! You can't do that...** She looked up at Yanley and shook
her head. "You better go, Lady. I'm sorry, but Luneth's is upset."
Her behavior of course upsetted Thi and Bram and the firelizards flew
tight cicles around her, hissing.
"Oh, for Faranth's sake!" Yanley nearly jumped out of her skin.
"Thistle, Bramble!" With mental command she sent her firelizards away.
They didn't like it, they wanted to protect her but she had trained
them to obey.
"Ninaine, if she doesn't let anybody touch you, you're in trouble.
What happens if you get hurt? Will she maul the healer trying to help
you?" she was concerned.
Ninaine was busy trying to soothe the outraged green. Kneeling, her
arms wrapped around Luneth, she stroked her hide and murmured soft
words to try to calm the little hissing whirlwind that she had become.
Frustrated and now defensive of her green, she finally snapped, her
words hard. "What if I don't want to be touched? Maybe she's
protecting me." Remembering herself, she flushed and looked down.
"Excuse me. I apologize Lady, but I have to get her inside before she
gets worse. I have to get her calmed down."
}: We're going? Let's leave. Now. I wanna go now. Get away from the
touchy person. I don't like her. :{ Luneth whirled and headbutted
Ninaine, nudging her towards the barracks. }: Now. I wanna go. :{
Ninaine rose and Luneth butted at her leg again. "I'm sorry." She
turned and walked away, Luneth trailing after her like a shadow.
Yanley watched after them with growing concern and alarm. Ninaine was
heading for lot of problems, even she could see that. What would
happen when Luneth matured and started Rising? What happened if
Ninaine for example, broke her leg...would Luneth allow her to be
treated? Maybe she should talk with the Weyrlingwing's staff.
