Rinnea sneaked into her da's room and climbed up on the bed where he
slept. He didn't move so she sat there watching him for what seemed
like forever. She poked his shoulder then his hip, but he didn't move.
Finally, she got very close but he didn't open his eyes so she reached
out and opened one with her fingers.

"Are you awake?" she whispered loudly. "Dragons are humming!"

"Oh, they are?" G'nir replied and yawned. "Good morning, sweetling."
He hadn't been actually sleeping, just pretending for her. It has been
a long while since she's actually stayed with him for the night.

"Morning," she said in a singsong voice as she bounced on her knees.
"There will be dragon babies today."

"Yes, and we better get ready for it, it means a big feast. You better
dress on your gather-dress," G'nir replied and rolled up from the bed.

"Auntie packeded it for me," she bounced then she stopped as she
suddenly thought of something and a frown crossed her face, "Can you
braid hair?"

"Eh, no, I don't know how to do it," the question stopped G'nir on his
tracks. He didn't know anything about women's hair. He was more used
to undo them than to braid them.

"I'll call a drudge to bring as breakfast, perhaps she can help you
with your hair," he suggested after moment of thought.

"Okay," she said and kept bouncing on the bed as she watched her da go
to call the drudge. "I want some hot cakes," she called after him.

"I'll ask if they have those," G'nir called her back and got his
orders sent to kitchen.

She finally jumped off the bed and ran into her own room to find the
dress and put it on but the opening was in the back. "Da," she called
as she trotted back. "Can you do me up?"

"Hhhm? You mean buttons? I can those, come over here," G'nir replied,
quickly changing his night clothes to gather tunic and trousers. His
hair stick out since he hadn't yet done anything with it.

"Yes, my buttons please," she ran to him and turned her back so he
could button her up.

Sasima had been in the kitchen when the call came for breakfast for
the Weyrleader and loaded the tray herself. She had a drudge carry it
for her and when she got to the door she dismissed him and knocked and
opened the door. "Sir," she said as she came in and placed the tray
on the table. "The breakfast you ordered."

"Thank you, Sasima. Could you please help Rinnea with her hair?" G'nir
asked, finishing buttoning her dress. The buttons were on the back
side and he wondered again what was the sense in that. Women's fashion
always seemed very impractical to him.

Sasima wasn't very conversant with children having avoided them as
much as she could but hair she could do. "Of course," she smiled at
the two of them. "Rinnea, do you have a brush?"

"Yup, in my room," she said.

Sasima turned toward the other rooms and poked her head in until she
identified the one Rinnea was using. Retrieving the brush and some
ribbons, she returned. "How would you like it, fancy or just braided,"
she asked the Weyrleader.

"It's a Hatching day, she needs to look presentable," G'nir said and
went to do his own hair. He was Weyrleader, the representing the whole
Weyr. He need to look his best too.

Sasima nodded and took the brush and ribbons from the little girl.
"Sit right here," she had a chair pulled out and began to brush out
the long hair. Then separating it she began to braid. When she was
done with those she looped them up behind her head and arranged them
in a knot with the ribbons and loops hanging down her back.

"There," she smiled at the young girl. "All done."

Rinnea jumped off the chair and ran to look in a mirror but couldn't
see the back. "How do I look," she called out to her da and spun in a
slow circle.

"You look very pretty," G'nir said with affection and gave her quick
peck on the cheek. "Now, shoes, the Sands are hot."

Sasima continued to hover and help. "Here they are," she called when
she found the missing shoes shoved under the little girl's bed.

"Thank you," Rinnea smiled and took the shoes. Sitting on the floor
she pulled them on but one buckle was resistant to her attempts to
fasten it. "Da?" she called holding up the foot.

"What?" G'nir was middle of pulling his own boots on.

"Can you buckle my shoe?"

"Just a sec..." G'nir stomped his own foot to the boots and leaned to
help her. "There, all set." He pulled something out of his pocket. "Here's
for you, my little lady," it was a silver necklace, a chain and simple heart-shaped
pendant.

"Oooh daddy it's so pretty," she gushed and her eyes got big at the
necklace. Rinnea was all girl in that respect and loved pretties. She
instantly turned her back so he could fasten it on. "Thank you," she
bounced a little on the balls of her feet in excitement.

Sasima smiled and the moment and turned to dish up plates of food for
the pair. It was going to be a long morning and things moved quickly
from here forward. She pulled a chair out for the little girl.
"Hotcakes," she called. Then she caught G'nir's eye and pointed to her
own hair with a twinkle.

"I'm glad you like it. Now, let's eat," G'nir replied to his little
girl. Catching Sasima's gesture, he answered it with a wink. W'ser was
lucky one.

Sasima smiled and turned for the door as the pair dug into their food.
"Brush your hair before you go out G'nir," she smiled over her shoulder
at the Weyrleader.
