She was getting so much better at swimming. She was pretty sure that she
could end her lessons soon. The thought made her sad, though. Then she
wouldn't get to see Bel all the time. Pushing her head under the water,
Veerona kicked and put her arms out like she had been taught.

"You're a regular little fish, you know that?" Irabel commented as the
girl burst once more from the water. "I bet pretty soon you'll be
swimming almost as fast as a dolphin."

She giggled, splashing on purpose. "Nuh uh. Dolphins are way fast." Her
eyes twinkled, though, with the laughter. "Bel, how come dolphins have
pods?"

"Because that's the name given to a group." Irabel slapped at the
surface of the water to send spray at the little girl in return. "Don't
ask me how the name came about, I have no idea."

"Hmmm...and the Tillek?" Vee seemed to be quite curious. Indeed, the girl
had been listening to Milga talk about her lessons and was beginning to
pick up on some things.

Irabel shook her head. "Another good question. From what I understand,
it was a title given from long, long ago by ancient ancestors. Even the
dolphins don't know its origin, but it remains in use." The
journeywoman cocked her head as she regarded the young woman. "You're
asking a lot of questions. Are you entertaining the idea of becoming a
dolphineer someday?"

"No, that's what mother was and she died. But it might be good to know some
stuff anyway." She shrugged, thinking that had to be true.

"That doesn't mean you couldn't be. I'm a dolphineer and I'm still
here." Irabel pointed out. She knew the child's mother had passed away
but she'd never known the details. Irabel wasn't sure it was her place
to ask. "But regardless, I'll be glad to teach you about whatever you
want to know, so ask away."

"'Kay. I'll tell if I have questions." She considered everything else and
stopped
swimming, preferring instead to latch onto Irabel's back and float. "How
come you never had a baby like me?"

"Since when did you have a baby?" Irabel queried in return, then
grinned at the strange look the child gave her. "The way you asked it
sounded like you'd had a baby. Never mind. I've never had a baby
because I've just never really been with anyone I ever wanted to have a
baby with."

"Oh....So you might have one then someday?" She sounded hopeful.
Veerona had always been the smallest. Something lately had interested
her in smaller children. She wanted to know if they were fun to play with.

"I have to meet someone I want to have a baby with first." Irabel
laughed and shook her head. "Right now, I'm married to my craft, but
who knows what the future will bring?"

"Well...." She was trying to think of the name of the man she had met. He
had seemed nice. She muddled and scrunched up her face for a moment. "I
think maybe Thayde is nice. He likes my shells."

"Thayde? Are you trying to set me up, Vee?" Irabel chuckled at the
thought. "Don't worry about me. If it happens, it happens. If not, oh
well."

"What is setting up?" She looked curious, wondering what Irabel meant.

"Oh nothing. Come on, want to see who can hold her breath the longest?"

She was no dummy. She knew Bel would win, but she played along anyway.
