Daigoro smiled as he glanced over at the two small pots lined up next to his fireplace. Both contained little flits, warm and snug in their shelled homes until they were ready to come out into the world and hopefully find their human to impress upon. The Hallsecond had received them earlier in the day, and he couldn't wait to give them to their new owners.
He had sent a message down to the kitchens, asking Cinale to send Cat to him with a fresh pot of klah, just so he could surprise her. He was almost dancing in his seat in his impatience. Daigoro couldn't wait to see the look on the young woman's face!
Catriana knocked on the Hallsecond's door, balancing the tray and the klah. So often had she managed this maneuver that it had become easy enough. "Daigoro?"
"Ah, yes, Cat," he stood with a grin. "Please set that down right here."
Catriana entered and set the tray down as directed, then poured him a cup of the klah, preparing it just the way he liked it- she'd been learning to observe people and their tastes, here. She glanced up at him and said, "You seem in high spirits today, Sir."
He nodded. "That's because I have a present for you."
She caught her breath. "Sir?"
"Look by the fire," he said with a nod of his head.
She did so, took note of the pots, but wasn't exactly sure what to make of them. "What are they?"
"Well, one of those," he grinned, "has your flit egg in it."
Her eyes widened and after a moment she started grinning just as he was. "Oh! Oh Daigoro, thank you so much!" She had an urge to run to him and hug him- but that wouldn't be proper behavior at all.
Daigoro threw his head back and laughed. Her reaction was priceless!
"Well, go on, lass, go choice which egg you want."
"Can...can I look inside the pots?"
"Please, go right ahead."
Cat knelt beside the two pots, and gently lifted the lid off of one, her hand wrapped in a fold of her apron. She peeked inside, and caught her breath at the sight of the little egg nestled in the sand. "Oh, how lovely!" she breathed, utterly enchanted. She'd never seen a firelizard before she'd come to the Hall, and certainly had never seen one of their eggs before either.
Daigoro crouched down beside her and smiled down at the Eggs. It was hard to believe that Wort had ever come from an Egg that small.
Actually, his Egg had been a _bit_ bigger. But still... "Well, chose whichever you like. You get first choice."
She peeked into the other pot, and glanced between the two. "This one." She closed the lid of the second one, and nodded at the first one she'd opened. "I think I'd like this one..."
The Hallsecond nodded. "That's just fine. Now, do you have a fire in your room?"
"Yes, sir."
"Good, 'cause you will need the Egg to stay warm. Keep it by the fire like you see here. But be sure to turn it, or you will just cook the poor critter."
"Do I turn just the pot, or the egg inside? And how often?"
"You can just turn the pot. Every couple candlemarks or so." He frowned slightly. "Do you think your duties will allow you?"
"I don't think Cinale will mind. I will ask her, though."
"Actually," Daigoro said carefully, "if you like, I have proposition.
I'm usually in this room during the day. You can leave the egg here and I can turn it for you, and that way if it begins to hatch I can send for you. I certainly wouldn't want you to miss it. And after your duties you can take it back to your rooms."
"Oh, that would be wonderful...I don't know how to thank you for...for everything." Catriana couldn't seem to stop smiling. "How long will it be before it hatches?"
"Hmmm... I'm not entirely sure," Daigoro said, scratching his head.
Fieayz had just said the clutch had been laid 'the other day'. And that was a bit over a sevenday ago... "I'd say in the next seven day or two."
"I hope I can be patient enough for that!" Catriana laughed. She was so very excited about this- a deviation from the endless routine of the Hall.
"Well, I don't think you have much choice in the matter," the Hallsecond laughed. "This little thing will hatch when its ready to hatch and there's no hurrying or delaying it!"
"I know. I'll just have to learn to be patient." Catriana sighed dramatically.
Daigoro could understand her feeling perfectly. "Don't worry. Soon enough you will have a flit of your own."
