As soon as she received the word that Benani was back, Yanley started to
prepare to go to Amber Hills Hold. D'ale couldn't take her, not this
time. He was Wingsecond and had duties. But this was the Weyr, and all
she had to do was ask nicely. She was very good at asking nicely. She
took Daley with her and packed for longer stay.
Yanley thanked the senior weyrling and the young dragon who had given
her the ride before she dismounted. The rider helped her with the baby
and bag. "You can go now, I have flits and can send them for ride back
home," she told the weyrling. She looked around in the so familiar court
yard, bit shocked by her own words. Amber Hills were no longer her home,
the Weyr was.
Zathris was there to greet her. He had been hesitate to leave Benani's
side, but at the same time, this was his sister in law. It was
difficult. He wanted to be around her, she wanted to be around him, and
yet she shied from his touch. It was difficult not to imagine what sort
of things that tunnelsnake had done to her, and even more difficult to
reign in his temper. The sight of Yanley did bring about a bit of
relief. Between her, his own sister who would arrive in a couple of
more days and Barenziah, Benani would be surrounded by women he thought
could be helpful to her. "Thank you for coming. I know you already
have your hands full."
"For Benani, I'll drop everything else, except the baby of course, and
come running," Yanley said with serious face. "How is she and how are you?"
"We're..." What should he say? They were far from all right - Benani
more so than he. Zathris ran a hand through his hair and heaved a sigh.
"We're alive. She's alive." And that was a start. They would just
have to take it in baby steps from there. "I think your arrival will do
some good."
"Let's hope so," Yanley had walked next to him. Placing her hand on his
arm, she gave it encouraging squeeze. "How's the boys?"
"They're just fine, it's Benani I'm worried about." After everything
that had happened, how could she ever be herself again? Zathris wanted
his wife back. She may have been returned physically, but she was far
from truly there. "And what about you two?" Despite his own issues, he
didn't want to be rude, and he did care about Yanley. "Is D'ale
treating you right?"
"D'ale's wonderful and Daley is growing like a weed. Say hi to uncle
Zathris, Daley," Yanley replied and pulled aside the fur around her
baby. Daley just yawned.
A pale imitation of a smile turned a little brighter at the sight of the
babe. "He has your eyes." He remarked as he ran his hand through his
hair. "Here, let me take you both to see her. She'll enjoy cooing over
the baby."
"So I hope too. Nothing to cheer people up than cute little babies,"
Yanley said.
At least for women. Sometimes men, depending upon the man. Zathris
enjoyed children, but not to the same extent that his wife and other
women in general seemed to. Or maybe just in a different fashion. "How
long do you think you'll be able to stay?"
"As long as I'm need..or tolerated," Yanley replied and cocked an
eyebrow. She had not forgotten the scene Ninaine's parents had made
during the Hatching and unfortunately, they weren't the only people who
thought like that.
"I think with recent events, you will be the last thing on people's
minds." At least, Zathris hoped so. He didn't want Yanley to get
persecuted because of her decisions, but he was grateful that she was
taking the chance to help his wife. "You let me know if anyone gives you
any grief. I won't tolerate it."
"Don't worry about me," Yanley said lightly, "I'm my father's daughter
and so is Benani. We pull through."
He hoped so. Zathris really, really hoped so.
