Relea

Relea

Relea stared at the hat that was only halfway completed. A straw hat
sported dark blue ribbon wrapped around the base, but there were other
decorations waiting to be attached. A few light blue buttons and
fabric flowers of various shades of the same colour remained prostrate
on the table. A few moments of frozen stillness and one hand moved to
unwind some thread from a spool as a sniff escaped. The conversation
with Reven hadn't gone well at all, and while she hadn't meant to
anger him, the words he'd spat at her had stung.

Coran arrived home at his usual time, although he felt a little more
fatigued than usual since he had dealt with many of his elderly
regulars that day. The words "my back" and "not as good as it use to
be" were used quite frequently. As he closed the door his eyes swept
the room and fastened on the familiar image of Relea at her work
table. Only the rigid set of her shoulders and the less than pleased
look on her face told Coran that something wasn't quite right with his
lovely wife.

Coming over to her work table, Coran placed a land hand on her
shoulder, "Hey, you," he signed, "how was your day?"

Relea tilted her head back to gaze up at her husband. Her immediate
thought was to simply say 'fine', but two things hindered her. First,
he'd probably see right through that. Second, it wouldn't be true and
Relea wasn't comfortable confiding in anyone else. "Reven and I fought."

Coran blinked, clearly not expecting that answer, "About what?" He
asked, and then had the sense of mind to wonder how Relea had even run
in to Reven since his brother had taken to hiding out in his rooms or
office.

As if she had somehow sifted through his thoughts, Relea signed. I
caught him skulking through a hall." That was only the beginning. Relea
recounted the conversation almost word for word. When she arrived at
Reven's final words to her, the motions of her hands became more animated.
"Then he stalked off."

Coran felt the sting of his brother's words as if Reven had delivered
them himself. How dare Reven insult his wife's impairment! A flash of
anger made Coran's eyebrows draw together and his jaw tighten, "I am
sorry. There's no excuse for his behavior."

"It doesn't usually bother me." Usually. Until someone made her feel
like she was broken. Leaton had done that often, but Relea had hoped
she'd escaped such treatment. She supposed she was wrong.

"Well it bothers me," Coran said firmly, his hand gestures crisp,
reflecting his feelings, "he had no right. It is unacceptable." He
shook his head, his lips pressed into a thin line, "I will talk to
him." After nearly killing himself in his trek to get back to Green
Valley, Coran would have thought that Reven would be ecstatic to be
back, and ready to be the holder again, but it seemed as if the man
was the furthest thing from it.

To be truthful, it_did_ bother her, the way he'd reacted. She hadn't
been prying into what happened. She'd never expected to become some
sort of confidant. Relea had just hoped to help him see that the way
he was behaving was only making things worse and encourage him to
confide in someone - not necessarily her. "I don't think he'll
listen."

Coran shrugged, "I don't care, he'll hear it anyway." He reached out
and placed a hand on Relea's shoulder, his thumb rubbing soothing
circles against her, "He's not exactly been himself. He was a little
strange at the Weyr too. Hasn't really talked about what all took
place while he was gone."

And that was part of the problem, which Relea had pointed out to him
before he'd so cruelly thrown her situation in her face. It wasn't as
if she had expected him to bear his soul to_her_. Arippa, yes.
Coran, maybe, but not her. She'd only hoped to encourage him to open
up to those he might be more comfortable with. "He needs to. To
someone."

"He's stubborn and thick-headed. Luckily for you, I am the smart one."
He winked, hoping to lighten her mood a bit.

Relea would have normally countered with a sarcastic comment, but all
she could manage was a smile. His words continued to roil within her
and she finally sighed, then set aside her work. "I don't feel like
doing this right now." She signed in explanation.

Coran hated that he could do nothing more to help his wife, "Would you
like to talk a walk in the gardens?" He asked. It was something they'd
done when they were courting.

"Yes. I think I would. " Maybe that would help get her mind off the
argument.
