Brooding On The Beach

Writers: Bree, Cali
Date Posted: 6th February 2006

Characters: Mosler, Zanyar
Description: Mosler comes to terms with the fact that he is now Hallmaster.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 10, day 1 of Turn 3

Mosler stood on the beach looking out at the waves gently lapping the rocky outcroppings. He didn't know why he was even there. After escorting Seori safely on board The White Pearl and seeing it off with the morning tide, Mosler had intended to go straight to the Hallmaster's office, his office now he supposed, and to start looking over the paperwork that had mounted up over the last sevenday since Seori's stroke. Somehow though, he had found his way to the beach instead, the Hall just barely out of view, and at that moment he didn't think he ever wanted to see it again. It was much more peaceful here by the water. "Brooding already?" asked an amused voice behind him. "I would think you would have at least waited a day, Mosler..."

Mosler gave a quick look over his shoulder at his long time friend. Leave it to Zanyar to know exactly what he was feeling. "So what if I am?" he said with a shrug, "Don't I deserve to?"

Zanyar laughed, shaking his head. "Only _you_ would think a promotion gave you the right to pout. Come now, Mosler... this is the sort of honor men dream about!"

Mosler grunted and took a step back from the water's edge. "I never dreamed about it. I didn't, don't, want this. You know the only reason I took the Hallsecond position was as a favor to Seori. I didn't know what I was doing _then_, do you really think I know what to do _now_!" "Sure you do." Zanyar stood next to Mosler, watching the water. "You may not _know_ you do, but Seori knows it. That's why she chose you."

"She chose _me_ because she couldn't stand Houser, Metlick flat out refused, and I was the only other Master the dolphins would approve!"
he exclaimed, suddenly feeling angry at Seori for putting him in this position. He quickly tramped down on that anger though, it wasn't her fault. She might have been a smooth talker, but he had fallen for it so he had no one to blame but himself. "Oh, stop sitting around feeling pity for yourself," Zanyar said sharply, crossing his arms. "You know what _has_ to be done, so start there and everything else will fall into place. But whining about it isn't going to make it better! You're the Hallmaster now, and Hallmaster's aren't allowed to whine."

"How about sulking? I've never found it an attractive quality in my son, but maybe it has it's place..." A quick look at Zanyar told Mosler that wasn't a viable option either. "Okay, okay." he threw his hands up and grinned at his friend, "I give up, I get it, and you're right. Hallmaster's aren't allowed to whine and this hall is now unluckily stuck with me and I better learn to deal with that." He indicated the path back towards the Hall and started walking, asking with a tease in his voice, "Now, when are you going to get off your tail and get your master's knots so I can ruin your day by making you my Hallsecond?"

Zanyar snorted and shook his head. "You wish, Mosler. I'm happy with what I'm doing. Besides..." His voice grew serious. "It will be a long time before I get over how wrong my predictions about the hurricane were. I don't think I'd take Master's knots if you tried to give them to me."

"Well, it's the Hall's loss." Mosler replied with a smile, patting the dolphineer on the shoulder. He didn't bother to argue with his friend about his self doubts, they had been though it many times before and he knew it would just take him time to get over it. "Come on then, if you're going to make me go back to the Hall, the least you can do is help me go through that heaping mountain of paperwork that has accumulated on Seori's... I mean my... desk."

Shaking off his mood, Zanyar did his best to smile. "Of course. And I'll keep you from whining about it again if it's the last thing I do."
