Description: Thayde checks up on the injured Irabel.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 8, day 9 of Turn 7
Irabel didn't like being cooped up and she certainly didn't like being
useless. When the morning had come, she'd managed to hobble out of
her room and plant herself in one of the work rooms so she could at
the very least go over documents and plans for the upcoming mission as
well as review reports about various weather activity further North
that affected currents and water conditions in the south. It was
better than confining herself to her room, but she sorely wished she
could regain her former mobility.
"How goes the ankle?" Thayde asked as he walked in to the workroom and
spotted Irabel.
"It hurts. But I can sort of move." Irabel tore her eyes away from
her work and managed a small smile for the Master. "I just...can't do
my normal routine."
Thayde sat down at the table with Irabel, "And I bet that is killing
you isn't it? You strike me as the type that likes her routine. Am I
right?" he smiled.
"I'm the type who likes to be able to do her work and do it well.
When I can't...well, yes, it's killing me." Irabel sighed softly and
peered back at the documents in front of her. "At least there are
some things I can do sitting down."
"How is the wrap holding up?" The Hallsecond inquired as he glanced
down at her foot beneath the table to try and gauge if it needed any
touching up.
"It's slipped a little, but mostly fine." Irabel had tried staying
off of it, but it was more difficult to hop on one foot than it
looked. "I should rewrap it." She wasn't completely without any
abilities.
The man shrugged in his easy-going manner, "Suit yourself. Have you
had lunch at least?"
Irabel's head canted to the side. "Is it lunch time already? " She
hadn't realised how much time had passed. Yet, she felt like she had
gotten so little done.
Thayde shrugged, "I don't eat on a set schedule, just when my stomach
tells me. And my stomach is telling me that it_must_ be lunch time."
Swimming did tend to burn off meals faster.
"I am hungry." Irabel admitted almost sheepishly. In retrospect, she
realised she hadn't even had any breakfast which probably wasn't a
good thing. As if to hit the point home, her stomach chose that
moment to emit a loud growl, which only set the dolphineer blushing
again.
"Can you make it to the dining hall or would you like me to go grab us
something?" Thayde asked, his eyes studying the blush on her cheeks.
"Um." To ask the Master to bring her something seemed absurd, but
even more absurd would be her hobbling painfully through the halls or
having him carry her where everyone could see. No, Irabel preferred
to accept the gracious offer. "If you don't mind bringing me
something, I think that would be better. It can wait til you've eaten
if you want to eat there."
Thayde rolled his eyes, a small grin tugging at his lips as he stood,
"Self-sacrificing as usual, Irabel. I will be back shortly." He turned
and left the workroom.
It was more that Irabel just didn't want to over burden him,
particularly since he was the Hallsecond. She sighed and once more
began to peruse the records while she waited.
When the Hallsecond returned it was with a tray of items including
bread, thinly sliced meets, cheese, and an assortment of fruit. "And
if there is nothing on this tray that suits you.... You are on your
own." There was a teasing glint in his dark brown eyes.
"Oh no, this is just fine. Nice and light." Which was perfect for
lunch, especially if she had to go out in the water. Unfortunately,
she wasn't doing that for the next couple of days until her ankle was
better. "Thank you." She didn't reach out for anything right away,
though, for she was going to wait for Thayde to choose his portions
first.
It was a fairly common thing for women to do so Thayde thought nothing
of it as he helped himself to a bit of the food first. The Hallsecond
had always been very conscious about what he ate and whether or not it
was appropriate for his body. Just as with dragonriders, being a
dolphineer required one to be fit and toned. He didn't say anything
but relaxed in his chair as he tore apart a piece of bread and popped
some of it into his mouth.
Once Thayde had taken what he wanted, Irabel allowed herself the same
after she set aside the records so they wouldn't get spoiled. She
nibbled on a bit of cheese, then pried off a piece of redfruit with
her teeth. Her eyes darted up to fall upon the Hallsecond and she
couldn't refrain from squirming a little in her seat. Was she suppose
to say something? Do something? She supposed she should try and
converse with him. Unlike some of the other dolphineers, Irabel
hadn't spent that much time with Thayde before the other night with
the fireflies and she wasn't sure how to act around him. "So...um.
How has your day been?" She might as well try to hold a friendly
conversation.
"Good. Managed to get two more dolphins out of the infirmary and back
out into open water this morning." Thayde said as he popped a cubed
piece of fruit into his mouth, his posture casual as he ate.
"Oh, yes?" Irabel perked up at that bit of news. She hadn't known
that, for she'd not been in the water, though Kerchek had been told of
what was happening so he wouldn't wonder why his partner didn't show
up. "Who?"
"Viya, and Thema." They were two of the pod dolphins that did not have
partners. Because of his work as the main healer, Thayde knew all of
the dolphins in the pod on a personal level.
"Ah, good to hear. I hate it when dolphins get hurt." Irabel
supposed she could have gone into healing, but she probably wouldn't
have been a very good healer for she had a feeling she wouldn't be
able to hold it together during certain situations.
Thayde didn't want to admit that more often than not dolphins came
into the infirmary but were never able to go back out into the open
sea by themselves. Still, he tried to provide quality of life for
them. "Is Kerchek looking forward to the trip?"
"Yes, he's very eager to go, but it will be delayed now that we have a
new addition to the mission." Not that it was necessarily a bad
thing, it just made things a little more complicated and they had to
prepare more intensely. "However, I think it will be educational.
And fun."
"I hope I haven't gotten too out of shape. I haven't been on a long
swim in a while." Being in the infirmary all the time didn't leave him
much time for lengthy trips.
"Perhaps you should practise before we leave." All dolphineers needed
to be expert swimmers on their own. "If you need help..."
The corners of Thayde's eyes crinkled when he smiled, "I don't
necessarily need help, I did make it to Hallsecond knowing how to
swim." His tone was light with amusement, "But should you like to join
me for a few swims in preparation of the trip, I think that would be
nice."
"I can do that if you wish." It was always nice to swim with company,
even if it wasn't dolphin company. Human companionship had a flavour
all its own, though Irabel had to admit she wasn't as familiar with
the Hallsecond. Famell, Naton, Aslvor, she'd spent far more time over
the last turns with them, knew them better, could relax more. Thayde
was still something of an unknown element. Perhaps this would make it
less so.
"As soon as your ankle is better we will hit the water." Thayde said,
sealing the deal by popping another piece of fruit in his mouth and
flashing Irabel a smile.
